Here is what I had to do to disable the Microsoft MCE remote so that certain key presses don't launch Vista Media Center (eg. guide, start). I am running Vista Home Premium 32-bit edition. I previously had disabled the four Windows Media Center Services.
Follow at your own risk...
*check to see if the ehTray.exe process is running in the task manager, if it is - end task
*Browse to C:\Windows\ehome
*Look at the properties of the file ehTray.exe
*Take ownership of the file by changing the owner to the logged on user
*Change the permissions to give the logged on user full control of the file
*Rename ehTray.exe to ehTray.exe.old or similar
*Open registry editor (regedit)
*go to the key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
*delete the ehTray.exe entry
This should disable the ehTray process and keep it from adding itself back into the registry. If the file is not renamed, you can remove it from the registry and it will come back again on the next reboot when you press certain keys on the MCE remote.
You should now be able to use your Microsoft MCE remote with gbpvr on a Vista Media Center system without launching Media Center with the remote.
