I have a wired network, and a wireless router, feeding a PC upstairs. I have a wired MVP. I want to hook another wireless router I have that also has network ports, to the MVP, so that it can work wirelessly.

Has anybody done this? And can I use a regular router? Or do I need an access point?

I've done wired to wired router, but not wireless to wireless.

Get yourself a Buffalo WHR-G125 router (forty bucks on Amazon), stick DD-WRT firmware on it, and get yourself much more than just an access point. That's what I did to wirelessly extend a network across floors. Works a treat.

If you aren't familiar with DD-WRT, google it and there is a pretty good wiki that lists compatible routers and versions.

I'm using two Belkin 802.11g's with one as an AP. It has worked fine for years except for the damnable microwave!

FYI Fry's has their Airlink 802.11n routers for $50 and the salesman said that they can be set up as bridges or AP's. That's what I would try if I was starting out (or maybe another brand).

See... I have 2 D-Link wireless routers... One is in use... the other... I haven't hooked up. I'd love to use what I already have...

Not many routers have the ability to put into access point mode. AFAIK, you're options are:

- Enable an access point mode already present in the router's firmware
- Reflash the firmware on the router to DD-WRT (if it's compatible)
- Buy a router that is compatible with DD-WRT and reflash it
- Buy an access point
- Buy a router that can be put into AP mode.

Hard without knowing the router model #; ave you tried googling for the router model # and access point? This would probably help.

ww4397, found one on e-bay, got it home, set it up, and it works.

I did have to open the port on my wireless router, which surprised me, because my internal DHCP is on a router between the internet and the wireless router... (I didn't think my wireless router was filtering)

Oh well, it's all good now.

Which port did you have to open? I have two MVPs running each on a P-330W and no ports open on either a third P-330W as a router or the Netgear Rangemax I replaced it with.

Also make sure you are running the most recent firmware on it as it is much more stable than any of the old ones, I've been through about 4 firmware versions since I got my first P-330W about 2yrs ago and this one v1.8 5/15/07 seems very good.

I have my network setup like this:
Cable Modem -> Wired VOIP router -> Wired/Wireless D-Link router (where I needed to open the port) -> P-330W -> MVP

My GBPVR server is wired off the D-Link.

The Firewall port I opened on the D-Link was 7967.

I didn't have to open anything on the P-330W
