Okay, so I feel bad for wasting your time here, but the problem seems to be solved. I remembered that when I installed the ffdshow decoder package, I had made some non default selections, including, if I remember correctly, limiting the applications to which it had access. Now, I did try to specifically grant access to pvrx2.exe and the recording service exe, but maybe there are some other processes I needed to allow. So, long story short, I uninstalled it and reinstalled it with all the default options and selected to allow it access to any application. I'm now using the Nero video decoder (same as before) and the ffdshow audio decoder (same as before), and the playback is perfect! Also, I am recording a program as we speak, with nary a stutter in sight!
I'll let you know if it comes up again, but as so often seems to be the case with the byopvr crowd, it appears tp be all about the decoders.
