I am trying to get the EVR renderer working under Windows XP. I installed the .NET 3.0, WMP 11, and all the patches mentioned in the survival guide. Playing videos in AVI format works just fine. However, when I try to watch Live TV or a recorded show, I get no video (black screen) and sort of a screeching tone for audio. The tone seems to change as the recording progresses. The OSD shows up OK, just no video and audio. I am recording in the Microsoft DVR-MS format and using the Nvidia PureVideo decoder. However, I have tried several other decoders and get the exact same result.

FYI, it works great for me. I don't even have WMP 11; I only had to install .NET 3.0 to get it. I'm using a geForce 5200 and DScaler for the decoder. Works like a charm.

Afraid I'm in the same position as you, avi files work fine now after installing all the patches etc, but no picture/sound on live tv or recorded TV. Have only tried the cyberlink mux though and cyberlink pdvd9 decoder.

If you are using Nvidia purevideo decoder try to disable hardware acceleration from the property page. It was the trick for me.

After I installed all the patches into the survival guide (esp the DVD patch), I seemed to be able to re-enable hardware acceleration in purevideo and everything worked fine. The DVD patch seemed to be the one that cured it. Everything is fine now, except I sometimes get slightly jerky live TV after coming back from hivbernation. Not a biggy tho.

I tried disabling hardware acceleration, but it still does not work. Funny, cause like I said, AVI files play just fine, but no live TV or DVR-MS recordings. When I try these, it seems like the sound tries to play for just a fraction of a second, then it goes into a "tonal" sounf that actaully changes as the recording progresses. Bit I never get any video.

Anyone else have any suggestions? I'm really hoping to get away from running in FSE mode.

evr and xp has no hardware acceleration
that said if you use the latest intervideo codec the cpu usage is very low
i tried it but because the hardware accel didnt work its not ideal
sorry to say fse is still the best option for good playback

I dont think it's that simple. EVR may still be a better choice for some users. It can give better color and smoother video. Whether hardware acceleration is used probably isnt a major concern for many users.

If the user had been on Vista then they also would have benefited from the DXVA 2.0 acceleration.

This is probably a stupid question, cause I'm not very hardware lieterate - but if I install Vista will I get DXVA 2.0 acceleration or is this only available on newer display cards. I have a NVidia GEForce 6600. Could this display card be the reason I cannot get EVR to run under XP?

It worked for me w/XP with very little effort, however, it apparently killed the hardware acceleration I enjoy with the purevideo decoder & 6600GT card.

With purevideo and hardware acceleration, scrollers and sports events look just like they do with a live feed. Without it, scrollers are blurred/difficult to read and sports events are motion blurred and have almost a slow motion look to them. VMR9 Custom works well for me.

FSE or not FSE doesn't seem to make any difference on my setup, video quality is exceptional either way. I haven't monitored CPU utilization, although I know it's pretty low either way.

Quote:Whether hardware acceleration is used probably isnt a major concern for many users
From what I've found on my system, it's almost unwatchable without hardware acceleration on anything with a scroller or lots of movement (i.e. American Football or Basketball) - not because of dropped frames, tearing, or other nasty problems, but because of the blurring issues mentioned above and the general drab appearance of the video. The CPU utilization on my 3ghz system is acceptable either way, but unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you look at it), the difference in video quality is night and day with hardware acceleration vs no acceleration.
