Poor Video Quality

I just did a fresh install of windows vista and installed gbpvr 1.1.5. I had been using windows xp pro just fine I have a Hauppauge WinTV-PVR-USB2 for the tuner. For some reason while watching live tv in Vista the video seems to be jumpy, and not play smooth, and the quality just seems to be bad. I have tried a few decoders and so far nvidia's pure video, and ffdshow have not helped at all.

Is there anything else I could try? What decoders do you recommend?

whatever the internal hd is for now, I was using an external drive with XP and that seemed to work.

For the record vista does run nicely.

i use MPV decoder for Video:

make sure to go into the settings of the codec in the GBPVR config.exe and set the deinterlace to something you like. I choose "Blend"

This codec seems to work better than my nvidea and the others I tried. I have a Gforce 8600gts Video Card.

wow, youre using the MPV decoder with such a beefy video card... its like going 10 mph in a nice sportscar... lol.. I don't think MPV Decoder even has any DXVA support. But that's how the hobby is, you never know what will work best for any given setup.

tgkspike, try the DScaler decoders if you haven't, and set the colorspace to NV12 and see how it goes.

thanks for the reply. Just off topic and curious... I should start learning about how to get the best video and picture and I am pretty lost on what overlay and vx etc.. things actually mean..

Can you give me a quick reply on what is the highest quality settings for video in config.exe to shoot for and I will see what I need to do to optimize it. That way I can research to determine what I need to do to make it a reality,

Well, overlay and all of that is a thing of the past really when it comes to GBPVR. You should be using PVRX2, the "new" face and look of GBPVR. So you will be using VMR9 Custom for the most part, but you can try VMR9 FSE if you have problems with tearing.. and you can try EVR if you have Vista. Those are the renderers, or the way the video is displayed after getting spit out from your chosen decoder.

DxVA is more or less a standard of using hardware acceleration on your video card. You definitely have a powerful card that is designed to use onboard hardware to take the gruntwork out of decoding the MPEG2 and displaying it. Just like your tuner card is doing the work of encoding your video into MPEG2, you want your video card to do its part in helping decode it back before it goes to your monitor or TV. The nVidia PureVideo decoders are designed for this purpose, and a few others also have hardware acceleration as options (such as CyberLink). They drastically decrease the CPU usage since they offload a lot of the work to the card, and depending on your setup and your luck it seems you can also get a better picture.

After tweaking my video card's Direct3D settings, I now get my best playback using PureVideo decoders set to VMR pixel adaptive deinterlacing, which is supposed to decide how to independently deinterlace different parts of the picture. But anyway, this is becoming very long and I'll let you research into everything because that's the hobby and that's how you learn. Have fun!

i would run vista on a minimum of 2 gig of ram (probably not your only problem though)
others say that one harddrive is fine but i reckon if you are trying to record and playback at the same time 2 physical harddrives is better
try different refresh rates resolutions you should find a sweet spot
you say you tried the different decoders but did you try changing the renderer (vmr fse or evr since you are using vista)

is this the same machine you had xp on or a totally new system ?

Thank you for your reply. It sounds like I am missing out on the eye candy. I am using PVRX2 using vmr7 custom and now i will seek out the purevideo codec and optimize for full screen exclusive. I do not have Vista so no Enhanced Video Renderer. I hear .NET Framework 3.0 redistributable installs EVR on Windows XP. I need to download that to see.

I run my pvr through a projector at about 100'' on a screen. I may have to hook an LCD up to it and start playing for hours as you sparked my interests. I love eye candy

pvrx2 does not work with vmr7 only vmr9
once you have all your setting as you want them try FSE (makes huge differnce if using hardware acceleration)
evr on xp wont take advantage of your video card so dont waste your time there
tweaking your 3d settings your video card is what will give you results
and make sure you use something that will take advantage of hardware acceleration
if mpv has an option to use hardware acceleration then you are in bussiness
different drivers for video cards can also make a big difference latest isnt always best for video playback.
