Quick question

when encoding files outside GBPVR does GBPVR still record files or is there any clashes?

I'm encoding an mpg file and watching and recording shows at the same time.

thanks

I think he's asking if he can encode videos in an external program without it interfering with GBPVR's operation.

I don't see a problem with this as long as there are enough system resources left for GBPVR to operate correctly. If your external program is using all the CPU time or hogging the harddrive then there will be issues...

That will depend on your hardware. Do you have a single core or a dual core CPU? You can find out this by downloading CPU-Z and look for how many thread in the right corner that your CPU support. When you use Xvid 1.2.0 or later or x264 (that is the encoder for H.264/AVC) you will have a SMP capable encoder. Don't use more thread then recommended as it can even hurt performance or quality. Xvid 1.1.0 is single core version, so should use Xvid 1.2.0 or later for SMP.

Depending on what type your tuner are and what kind of material you record (MPEG-2 or MPEG-4 already encoded from broadcaster -for digital broadcast- or hardware encoder on tuners chip for analogue transmission), you will see a very small load on CPU. With dual core it will even be less as both core can switch work load.

It is more demanding for your system if it have to encode from tuner direct to hard disk as it then need to do this in real time, that is the case if you have a tuner which use software encoding.

There is many way to set up GBPVR which make it a tricky question to answer. If you don't use any automatic feature like post processing, comskip or that kind of thing, you would not interfere, but you can not transcode a file and at the same time watch it. That is common praxis for every encoder that they need to be able to access file without restriction and another application might block access to same part as encoder need to read for compression. (I will not explain every detail here, so you better read up on key frame, GOP in MPEG etc on wiki that is on the Net.)

1) Recording and transcoding the same file is not any good idea as I have explained above. It might work, but it will cost you quality and could cause problem depending on codec and container in use. MPEG is also rather better to finalise to keep correct frame structure and GOP. It is quiet often MPEG recording have some damage which make transcoding much more complicated.

2) Recording a file and watching another file which is final in its recording or transcode it doesn't matter as long there is storage, memory and strong enough video processor/CPU to keep do other task.

3) Multitasking is what the most complex situation would be when you do all in (2) at once. It is demanding for your hard disk to transfer file both as recording of MPEG2 which can become rather large after some time recording and transcoding where processing and end target must make use of hard disk.

I would recommend to have more then one hard disk if you want to all these thing at once and without noticeable delay.

Thank you for your replies. I am using a p4 3ghz ht with 1gig of ram.

I am encoding using light version of MkvMagic and this is using some mp4 xvid codec that makes files extremely small at high quality.
http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=113811

I need to learn how these p2p guys compress their files and keep the same quality.

I was recording survivor yesterday and computer rebooted or i did something... anyway I missed the last 10 minutes so i downloaded the episode and the file was only 349mb versus mine which is 2.28gigs.

mine is encoded at 480x480 and theirs is 540x325. mine is 10 minutes less hahaha

The Video quality was just as good as mine or better so now I want to learn everything about this new codec and proccess.

If I can figure this out then I will move my recorded mpegs to another computer and compress them and delete the originals since they are way to big.

300gigs is not enough when their is so much to record hehe

hate to delete something I may watch when i am in the mood Sad

They use autogk

http://www.autogk.me.uk/

set it for approx 75% quality and you'll get a good quality to filesize ratio...

All the shows I've ever downloaded have been xvid, which is also what is mentioned in the post above...

yes you are correct and i apologize. After my post i searched the web and came across the x264 codec... i am really lost as everytime i ever tried to compress with xvid i had a big file size and pixellation. I must track down the secret to this 364meg 1 hour high quality compressor and settings that looks as good or better than my 2gig+ file Sad

ok back to my original question.

i am encoding a 2.5 gig mpeg file in the background using automkv and I have GBPVR open and watching shows but none of my new recordings are recording. they just dissapear in the schedule as soon as one starts Sad

I guess I answered my question....

Sorry for the bad thread post.. i did not give you much of anything heh

blizard you answered my question and I really appreciate you taking the time to respond.

I am trying another encoding program called avidemux_2.4_preview3.1_win32.exe which transformed a 386 meg test mpeg to 60 mgs and I was really happy with the quality.

Thanks for helping me figure out my crazy thoughts

cheers
