well i just bought my 1080p samsung lcd today, and i have an old compaq, sr1124nx to be exact. it only has 512 mb of ram and an amd athlon processor, so i decided i would add a hard drive just to record tv shows on and then buy a hauppauge card, since this is a very budget minded project i came up with the items below all for just over $100 so what do you think?

Tv tuner card(not sure if its the right kind): Hauppauge WinTV PVR-150MCE - TV tuner / video input adapter - PCI ($56)

Hard Drive (i already have a 120gb on the computer so im buying a 40gb drive and using the 40gb as my main drive and 120gb just for tv recordings): Western Digital 40 GB Caviar EIDE 7200 RPM Internal Hard Drive (WD400BB) ($31)

Wireless mouse and keyboard(im buying this because im going to start using my tv as my pc monitor so i can sit in the living room on the couch and use my pc.): Microsoft Wireless Optical Desktop (PC & Mac) ($20)

any suggestions are welcome!

RAM seems to be a bit on the low side, but we need to know which CPU you have. Are you using the onboard video, or do you have another video card to use?

Hauppauge 150 will only do analog at standard def. You'll need a HVR1600 and either ATSC or clear qam source for HD.

Everything here looks good to get you started. You'll soon be adding more hardware like the rest of us addicts. More memory will probably be your first addition, and even if you could boost that by a small amount now, you will see a difference. 1GB would be good for your current system specs. If you plan to transcode or add more tuners, you might eventually want 1.5-2GB. Depending on how much you record and how quickly you watch and delete, you'll probably find the 120GB hard drive filling up pretty quick, so that is purchase number 2. Smile
