I am generally satisfied with the performance of my system(including HD despite my low end specifications). My last real complaint is analog TV, specifically the quality of the picture on my LCD TV. I am currently using the PureVideo decoder(it's the only one that provides smooth HD playback on my system). For standard analog NTSC TV PureVideo appears to be upscaling the video a bit(maybe +10%) which I believe is resulting in the degradation in quality of analog TV. I turned on the FFDShow postprocessing and it indeed improves the quality of the analog TV picture. I do notice that with FFDShow turned on that the analog TV picture is smaller(thus has less scaling than Purevideo) which I believe in part leads to the better picture quality with FFDShow. However, FFDShow when turned on with Purevideo this leads to a lockup of PVRX2 when tuning HD channels(it's OK on analog channels).
So my question is can you set some level of scaling with Purevideo in perhaps an effort to scale the analog TV video appropriately? Or are there smoothing functions for Purevideo that can lead to better picture quality? I noticed when running cable directly to the LCD that it stretches the image to be full screen and then applies extreme smoothing-this makes the picture look decent but more muddied compared to what I see in PVRX2.
Or is there a way to turn on FFDShow so that it can coexist with Purevideo and not cause lockups when tuning HD channels?
Hopefully this post makes sense.
