Help with GBPVR, MediaMVP and vista

hi all.

so my last computer crapped out and i had to get a new one - now with vista.

I first had trouble installing wintv pvr usb2, (which i was hoping to use as a second tuner) so i abandoned that. I do have an internal tv tuner, however, so all should be good. I installed MediaMVP and then GBPVR. I disabled the two MediaMVP services and started the GBPVR service. i selected 'one server to autostart' and restarted the computer, expecting to see the little box on the corner of my screen indicating that my media server was operational. it wasn't there. I then opened the config file and read the warning that vista doesn't play well with dongle.bin, and that i was to use dongle.bin.mvpmc-20090830.
so i extracted that into the dongle folder and tried to select it in the config file, but only 'dongle.bin' was still showing up. so i renamed the new dongle.bin.mvpmc-20070830 to dongle.bin, and the old dongle.bin to dongle.old, and then restarted the computer. no go (the media server box still doesn't appear in the bottom of my screen) so my questions:

1) Is there a vista survival guide to get gbpvr and mediamvp to play well with vista ultimate?
2) did i do the right thing with the dongle.bin rename, or is there another way to do this?
3) do i need to modify things other than dongle.bin?
4) does anyone know how to get wintv pvr usb2 to work on vista?
5) how can i try to manually start the media server if it doesn't start up automatically after a restart?

any help would be greatly appreciated!

What do you see on the screen of your tv?

Do you have a DHCP server on you network?

Is the Vista firewall blocking GB-PVR's MVP server?

thanks sub - looks like it was the firewall. I'd like to keep the firewall enabled, and just let gbpvr through it, instead of disabling it entirely. can you help me by suggesting which 'program' i should allow through the firewall, in order for this to work?

You have to allow PVRX2.exe for both TCP and UDP. The suggestion in this message from sub is a good one, because the firewall software might prompt you to update the firewall http://forums.gbpvr.com/showpost.php?p=2...ostcount=2

thanks for the update Martin.

given your suggestion, i changed the line in my config file from
<MVPServer>PVRX2.exe</MVPServer>
to
<MVPServer>PVRX2.exe -mvpmode</MVPServer>

I then added 'pvrx2.exe' to my list of programs that the firewall doesn't block, and then i put my firewall up again. This didn't seem to help, and i didn't receive any messages after i restarted everything. Now i know you said i need to allow pvrx2.exe for both TCP and UDP. does that come automatically when you choose the pvrx2.exe program and say 'allow', or do i have to manually specifiy the TCP and UDP? where would i do that?

sorry for being thick guys. It's just that a lot of this stuff doesn't come naturally to me.... so any help is appreciated.

by the way, Martin, i've seen you respond to another person who had the same problem as me, and when he asked 'which ports?' you said

I'm not sure how to 'open up all tcp and udp' ... all i see is a way to open up a port, either tcp or udp, for a particular program, through the 'add port' option on the excepted program. as for 'which port' - i'm guessing either 7967 or 7647 as these were the ones i can see in the config file, but i'm just guessing here. I'm using Vista - and if you could step me through the steps to find the appropriate port (if appropriate) and then allow access for that port both for tcp and udp, that would be great.

I am using the WinTV USB2 PVR with Vista Home Premium without issues. I think there was an install error or two originally, but I just reinstalled and its been working fine for three months. Not sure what your issue was, but someone might be able to help if you can provide more detail.

You shouldnt do that. You need to leave it as <MVPServer>PVRX2.exe</MVPServer>.

The suggestion was to manually run "PVXR2.exe -mvpmode" once so that you see firewall messages etc. You could do this from the Start -> Run button in Windows, or by running it from a commant prompt.

Correct it is either and that is why you need to make two exceptions one for tcp and one for UDP.

My Vista firewall has 'GBPVRX2' and 'GBPVRRecordingService.exe' ticked. I haven't needed to mess with ports - probably all enabled by default?
