I am looking a for a stable freeware MPEG2 decoder. The default Intervideo that comes with the PVR-150 isn't as great as I thought it would.

Dscaler one is best...also ATI Avivo decoder is good...both do hardware acceleration.. ati comes with avivo codecs install with video card..
set dscaler output colorspace to 'nv12' for accel. features..
Hardware: HDHR Prime, HDPVR 1212, Raspberry pi2, VFD display w/LCDSmartie

MPV is also a widely used one.

Question: I have just installed dscaler, how do I tell that it's actually doing something? I've looked for some sort of sign that there, but I'm not sure what to look for.

In the gbpvr config app, make sure you choose Dscaler instead of System default in the video decoder dropdown. Then gbpvr will guaranteed use dscaler.

Sorry, I've never used it myself. I would have thought it would show up without problems. You did install dscaler 5, not dscaler 4?

Great! I think dscaler 4 never contained a decoder, it just had deinterlacing postprocessing something something.
