I just noticed this, I can play 1080P movies with my current processor playing the movie out of WMP10 at about 85% CPU usage. However, it skips in PVRX2 and uses up 99%.

Is there anyway of stopping this? If this is the case, I will be limited to 720P. I think I'm using cyberlink decoders

Ok, more scientific:
720P: 58% WMP, 80% PVRX2
1080P: 78% WMP, 99% PVRX2

P4, 1.8GHz, 1GB RAM, ATI 9600 PRO 256MB, screen resolution for test at VGA 1680X1050

First guess is WMP is using overlay mode while PVRx2 uses VMR Custom. You could fiddle with it, but even if you get PVRx2 down to 80%, get comskip or something running in the background and you're going to need a bigger boat. Good thing you said this machine is only temporary. :p

If you're not getting hardware acceleration from the 9600pro, might want to look into that. I think a 1.8 P4 for 1080p is going to be a little rough regardless, though.
I bet Michael Bay uses GBPVR because it's awesome:

Is it even possible to get hardware accel from the 9600? Anyone know?

I don't think I'll be doing 1080p much anyway so I should worry about it.

There's also the issue of what type of file you are playing: VC-1, AVC, MPEG-2, etc.

But for any 1080P content, as mentioned, you are going to be stretching it thin with that video card.

Ok, just installed the HVR-1600. I can't even watch 1080i programming on LiveTV. HOWEVER, it records and I can watch it offline from PVRX2 (on WMP) and will play fine. Again, what in the heck is PVRX2 doing that sucks down 20% CPU or more during playback? Is it possible that I'm using a less efficient codec?

Is playback CPU or GPU dependent. On a whim, I overclocked my ATI board by like 18% but didn't notice much improvement.

I'm sorry I'm beating a dead horse, but there MUST be some way around this.

I tried messing with the VMR setting from VMR custom to VMR full, but that didn't do anything other than upset PVRX2 and pumped out some crashes on exit.

try setting the renderer to overlay and then run gbpvr.exe instead of pvrx2.exe (which cannot use overlay)

I have a 9600 pro which works fine for SD but I can't really image it being capable of 1080i.

Dumb question, but what is the difference beween GBPVR and PVRX2? I thought it was the same thing. Is GBPVR version 1.0.18 or something and not 1.15 like PVRX2?

Will I have reduced features running gbpvr?

Sorry for my noobness..

GBPVR.exe is the old user interface. PVRX2.exe is the new user interface. At some point in the near future I'll stop including GBPVR.exe with the release.

Well I tried gbpvr, didn't do the trick. I went back and check it out, and either something changed or I wasn't paying attention, but it just won't play 1080i dvr-ms files. Can't do it in WMP either. Seems to record fine and it will play via the 100bt wired network on my other more powerful computer though. I just can't watch live tv or watch recorded 1080i programming.

Can someone tell me if they're able to play 1080i dvr-ms files ok on their P4 1.8ish GHz machine?

Graphedit is claiming that it is playing dvr-ms files through ffdshow - is this a recommended decoder/player for these file types?

I might set these up to be converted nightly to xvid or something a little more compressed as far as bit rate. maybe that'll do it.
