On a PVRX2 box I have configured as a client, the aspect ratios all work using the F7 key except "Remove Letterbox". And of course this is the one that I need! Can I tweak something to make it work? Thanks.

The EVR (and Overlay) renderers cannot do the aspect ratio modes that use negative values, like the 'Remove Letterbox' ratio mode. I'm guessing you're using the EVR renderer? If you need this aspect ratio mode you'll have to use the VMR9 renderer.

Yes, the client machine is running Vista. The main machine is on XP SP2 and all the ratios work fine. Thanks for the reply. Now to get the DVD playback working and everything will be great!

Yeah, after much similar frustration I finally discovered that the EVR and overlay were ignoring my carefully calculated aspect ratios (it turns out my pixels aren't quite square) that used negative numbers. The flip side is, under VMR9, my performance for HD is miserable (Athlon 64 LE1600 (2.2GHz), integrated Radeon HD 2100). Should I expect HD to look smooth only with EVR? Or, is my system presumably capable of handling it just fine under VMR9 -- and I just probably have a bad setting someplace?

VMR9 FSE might be slightly better than VMR9 custom, but not better than EVR. Is that a 780g AMD based chipset motherboard you are using by any chance? Close, it's a 740g: the Gigabyte GA-MA74GM-S2H, running 2GB of DDR2-800. I switched back to VMR9 Custom, and it actually isn't as deplorable as it was the last time I was trying it, which leads me to suspect I changed something else as well, possibly related to ffdshow. I still feel somewhat overwhelmed by all of the options, and am trying to get a feel for what the right combination should look like, not to mention how to achieve it on my system!
