Every so often I pop in here for some help and advice and I am always pleased by the result, so keep up the good work!

I have lived with a couple of problems on my system for a while now, however this weekend saw my Mother in Law babysitting. If I want to take advantage of this situation, I need to make my system more mother-in-law friendly.

The two issues I am having include:

1/ No subtitles working on recorded programs. Works ok on live TV.

2/ I had a ripped DVD in my Video Recordings directory (not Recorded TV). This is just an AVI file. However, the issue I had is that I had to whip out my keyboard to clear the Restart/Resume dialogue as the MCE remote did not work (I could not switch between the two of them or cancel the dialogue).

Please! Help me make my system mother-in-law friendly. I am kinda liking this away-from-the-kids routine so help me out!

I don't think this information is recorded and is only accessible while live.

This is probably because you're using the Divx decoder. Many people have problems with this decoder since it creates a tray icon that steals the focus. There is a info on the divx forums about killing the tray icon, or alternatively you can uninstall the divx decoder and install the xvid one instead (or ffmpeg or some other capable decoder)
