I'm a poor college student that lives in a tiny dorm, so space is a premium. I don't have a TV in my dorm, since I use GBPVR for all of my tv watching. I recently purchased a Wii, and have been trying to use GBPVR as a television, attaching the Wii to the composite inputs on my TV tuner card. I have gotten it to work, but I have noticed the following:

1. With interlacing filters on, there is a signifigant lag time. This isn't an issue with tv watching, but it makes playing games on the Wii impossible.
2. Without interlacing filters, anything moving on the screen suffers from fairly bad interlacing.
3. I have tried to record the output from the Wii for posting on places like YouTube, and have had limited success.

So here are my questions:
1. What are some ways I can reduce interlacing, but keep lag to a minimum? Would a better graphics card help? Which filter and display settings should I try?
2. Whats the best format to record console signals, and what is a good (preferably free) program to convert it to something I can post on YouTube?

Thanks!

To be honest, I dont GB-PVR is the best solution for trying to view game consoles. It wasnt designed for this task. There will always be some lag, particularly if you try an record and play at the same time (think at least a couple of seconds).

To be honest, when I did my Wii recordings, I split the input to a TV and to the computer, so the players were seeing the Wii on the TV with no lag, and recording on the computer. This even allowed for "instant replay" functions which has great potential.

I also want to point out that even though there is interlacing, it is playable. Without GBPVR, I probably wouldn't be able to play my Wii in the dorm.

I've used media-player classic to do this with my Dreamcast.
It's just not auto-matic because command line functions for WMC are not documented well or just don't exist.

Dscaler might work for you also, but people complain of lag also if they use a hardware encoder card.

A cheap software tunercard would take care of this if your PC has enough juice.

Actually, you're TV tuner card may be to blame. Does it have on-board MPEG2 encoding? If so, it's probably a .5 second lag or so, just enough to mess up gameplay.

Yeah, its a Hauppage PVR 150, it has onboard MPEG2 encoder. It only lags when I choose "encoder pass-through". Perhaps a software encoder plugin may help?

mkenyon2 is probably right.
Now that he's mentioned it, I think I may of been using my Wintv-Go card instead of the PVR-150 to play my dreamcast.
But, I can't remember for sure.

So, a winTV-GO & WinTV2000 could probably be configured to launch from GBPVR & do what you want.

These cards are real cheap on e-bay.

Where are you setting 'encoder pass-through'? That may only be a software setting.
I don't think you can turn off the HARDWARE MPEG2 encoding on the PVR 150, which would happen before the SOFTWARE gets it's hands on the stream. I could be wrong, don't hang me. Smile

I tried composite in on Playstation, with an Avermedia 150 (pretty similar to the Hauppauge) and had the same delay, even using Hauppauge's software.

Unless you really want to record yourself playing, just download the DScaler program ; it's probably the best TV viewing program out there. It will bypass the MPEG2 encoder chip on your card and also deinterlace on the fly and you won't have lag. Just make sure you're getting the application, not the decoder.

I got DScaler and wow what a difference. No interlacing at all. Thanks for the help!
