Hi guys, ive found this link on the BBC regarding the introduction of HD broadcasting from 2009 - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7328029.stm

All looks very promising for TV in the UK, however will i have to change anything in regards to my hardware (c2duo, 2gb ram, nova-t 500) or the gbpvr software? Does it support it already?

Cheers guys,

Rob

They're probably going to use a format very similar to that recently introduced here in NZ, and in Norway and Sweden, and trialled by the BBC last year, ie H264 HD video. For the most part GB-PVR already supports it. There is a couple of minor quirks I'm still working on, but its pretty much already supported.

You hardware should be fine, but you may need a video card with hardware H.264 acceleration support to get good playback.

I guess by the time they start transmitting HD in London (2012), there will be plenty of decent hardware to choose from.

sigh.

Yesh, analogue switchoff here is Saturday 30th July 2011 so no bandwidth until then I guess. I might have bought an HD TV by then... Hauppauge may even have an HD MVP. Sub might hit V2. Big GrinBig GrinBig GrinBig Grin

I captured some of the BBC trial HD transmissions back in 2006 and they were pretty heavyweight. At best I got maybe 15fps playback but then again my machine isn't particularly speedy (2.4GHz P4 and standard 64MB AGP 4x video card). In theory an accelerated video card might have given me realtime playback - not sure.

To be honest, I'm not that excited about HD as some genres of programme really don't make the most of it (or aren't particularly suited to it). I have a friend who works in post-production for the BBC and who's recently been working on HD production. He reckons, depending on content, some of it isn't really any more impressive than SD. He did admit that some of the HD wildlife/nature programmes are quite stunning though.

Cheers,
Brian

If you can't wait, Freesat should launch this spring - see http://www.freesat.co.uk. Free to air satellite transmissions with HD. Go get an HDTV Martin123...

Spring is just about over ??!!?? - I see no sign of any retail hardware. I wasn't planning on replacing the Old CRT TV until it blew up. I can't see me with a PC driving a newer one - which is why I was hoping for delays and HD media player boxes, of whoevers make, if gbpvr can be made to support them.

I's me getting confused in my old age - thinking Summer was starting when "summertime" is mentioned with the clocks going forward.

Certainly not summertime or even spring with the snow forecast for tonight.
