Ok n00b-elicious here. I've got a HTPC hooked up to my 51" plasma (via HDMI) at the moment and i watch backed-up DVDs and TV shows using the excellent VLC player. No real problems but i'd love to be able to record HDTV to the computer so i can do away with my crappy FiOS DVR (and get the HD-only FiOS box).

Supposing i get this 1212, do i hook it to my STB via component cables then to my HTPC via USB and install GB-PVR and away i go? Seems easy enough but i'm a bit worried about changing channels as my components (aside from the TV of course) are all in another room and controlled by IR flasher. How do i control GB-PVR with this setup using my Harmony remote?? I used to have a TiVO and couldn't stand the delay when changing channels using the IR flasher so trying to avoid that here...

THANKS a ton! Bear with me i'll get smart and contribute i promise Wink

This type of setup will also give you slow channel changes. You get a about a second or so for the IR blaster to do its thing, another second or two for the STB to channels, and another half second or so of buffering inside the HD-PVR. Fine for recording TV, but crappy for watching live tv through.

Channel changing w/ firewire instead of a blaster makes a huge difference.
GBPVR v1.4.7
Windows 7 Ultimate (64-bit)
Intel Core 2 Duo 2.33 GHz
4 GB RAM, 160GB system drive
640GB recording drive
PVR-500 - analog cable stations
HDHomeRun - ASTC via antenna
nVidia GeForce 8600GT
1 PCH @ 1080p componenent (was NTSC via composite)
1 PCH @ 1080p HDMI (was component)

Thanks for the responses all... Ok so firewire, I have a new HP slimline that i *think* has a firewire in though i'll need to verify when i get home after work. is using firewire to change channels as easy as plugging one end in to each the STB and the computer? What software is required? Also, suppose i just want to use GB to record TV and still want to change channels via my STB as i normally do... Possible? How would that work?

PS - Thanks again for you folks time (and patience here)...
