got my unit back today. i haven't gotten home to test it out yet but in the letter that came with it they did say "We have also made some improvements to the HD PVR driver which can be found on the enclosed CD version 1.0B. Please update the drive by running HCWDRIVERINSTALL.EXE in the root directory of the CD."

I checked their webpage and the new driver version is on there as well. i dont know if this is something that is already well known or not, but if not now it is.

Interesting... the Hauppauge webpage still says that the date of the drivers is May 24th and it's v1. But the link indeed points to a v1.0b file which has files dated as late as June 16th.

Does your CD contain release notes? The drivers from their webpage do not.

doesn't appear that there is any sort of release note on the cd.

the unit itself does appear to be working correctly now. though only time will tell. ill check back at the end of the night. EDITED OUT because i remember we already talked about that known problem with live television.

A chip supply voltage had been changed. Some units with certain version of the encoder chip also had a small heatsink fitted along with small internal fan (that only runs while encoding).

Did they put any vent openings in the case? Without that I wouldn't think a fan would do much good.

No. Even without it the heat is more even distributed within the unit. Same reason people found it better on its side.

I received my new unit and can say it's an improvement, but it's still not fixed. I don't know whether mine has a fan or not - I don't really hear one - but it has been modified. It's marked 49001 LF Rev C2.

I haven't had a lot of time to test it yet but sitting where I'd prefer it to be on top of the cable box, it locked up recording 1080i after 17 minutes. I took it out of the entertainment center and had a fan blowing on the bottom constantly and it recordid a full-length movie @ 1080i fine. Now I just have to find out if there's someplace I can put it where it can record without a fan successfully.

In my entertainment cabinet on top of my STB is definitely a hostile environment. I put a thermometer directly on top of the STB and it ranged anywhere from 88 - 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Definitely warmer than expected so maybe I'll find the unit will work ok when it's removed from such a warm environment. Its definitely more sensitive than other electronic devices and certainly sitting on top of a warm STB ought to work since that's clearly one of the things it was designed to work with.

Just got back from vacation & my replacement from Hauppauge was waiting for me - it's been recording for almost an hour already - it's sitting on the floor under my desk.

They sent a disk with another driver to try, but I haven't installed it yet.

I'm pretty sure you need to install the new driver for the fix to be fully functional.

Waiting for my RMA unit back. If it still fails I am going to cut a hole in top of box, mount a 120 fan, and cut some notches out on underside for air to pull through. Stability must be rock solid and I am thinking the new box might not provide rock solid. Guess will see...
