Streaming Content from GBPVR over the net to a GBPVR client using Hamachi

Question,

Is it possible to do some form of streaming/live transcoding? Right now it I have it set up to do the shared file based "streaming". (IE loading the file from a network drive that is mapped to my home Media server). However, bandwidth is causing some issues, mainly stuttering, although I have been able to watch some recorded Divx videos (Recorded via Hauppauge 150, transcoded to Divx) using this setup but I would like to set something up using GBPVR that would either transcode the content to a lower bitrate / allow streaming.

I've looked into VCL, but I have to remote into the server, start the movie/show/recording/playlist and then on the client connect to the stream using VCL.. This isn't exactly the most user friendly way of doing this.

Any other suggestions?

Sorry no, there is nothing built in that would help with this.

You can tell it to transcode all your recording to some lower bitrate divx etc, but thats all done post recording, and converted on disk rather than at streaming time.

I may have missed something but it sounds like you need to use the web admin (EWA). Streams live tv, videos, music etc with a web interface and transcodes almost anything on the fly using vlc to 128, 256 and 512 bit rates which should cover most broadband upload speeds. read up about it on the wiki.
Even for home / LAN use it has it's uses as it's lower bandwidth and processing power make it suitable for wireless networks and older hardware.

True. It doesnt give him the GB-PVR Client on the otherside of the net, but it might give him what he needs.

I've messed around with several client setups and it's brilliant with a wired 100Mb network and reasonable hardware (my P3 runs at 100%, so I guess it's about the very minimum spec!).
Lesser hardware and non LAN or wireless (even 54Mb+) networks I'd recommend the EWA as you can set the bitrate to match the network. If you can run it at 'LAN' transcoding (still much less bandwidth than client streaming) with VLC full screen then you'll not even notice the difference. Obviously as you drop the bitrate the picture starts to block up a bit, but it's still watchable at 128 over an internet connection. It's pretty simple to use, has most of the features of a client machine and is actively developed so if you find you are missing something you can always stick it on the wishlist and cross your fingers!

BTW you can probably ditch himatchi too unless you're using it for other reasons.

I am using Hamachi b/c I don't have a static IP to access my server from outside my personal LAN. Unfortunately, my ISP doesn't provide them either so I'm out of luck for the moment.

Try using dyndns.com for getting around not having a static IP. This will give you a domain name of your choosing and a small client app that gets installed to keep the domain name pointing to you dynamic IP. I have used this in the past and it works well and its FREE.

soume routers even have (marginal) support for dyndns, they will keep the address updated without even needing a PC.
