I've been using GBPVR for a while and thought I give an MVP a go in the spare room. And I've got a few questions:

Firstly I seem to be having some trouble with channel changing, but it seems to only be BBC1, if I go from the TV guide to BBC1 its ok, if I then change to BBC2 or seemingly any other channel (without going back to the guide) it is also ok if I then change back to BBC1 I get corrupt BBC1 audio and a frozen corrupt image, changing back to the previous channel restores normality but any repeat attempt to get to BBC1 shows the same problem.

All this btw is with 1.2.13 with its bundled dongle server>cat5>router>cat5>mvp, MVP version is D3a, cap card in the server is NovaT500, Haupp MVP s/w not installed.

I will post logs tomorrow when I have a chance to clear them and replicate, I could post tonight but someone would have to wade though lots of irrelavent stuff.

Secondly
I had a look at the MVPMC dongle had a read and got confused. What the hell is emulation mode, I didn't seem to be able to get it to do anything, and why is there Myth tv references in the menus, is this relavent to gbpvr.
If anyone can point me at a plain english explanation I would be grateful.

Thanks all, and excuse the noob, im only a 5 hour old MVP user so I'm on the steep part of the curve......

Your problem seems to be similar to this one http://forums.nextpvr.com/showthread.php?t=36927 I maintain the MVP is not good for watching digital live tv.

Emulation mode is the name I gave to the software logic that works with the mvpmc dongle to emulate what the Hauppauge dongle does. The mvpmc dongle does a lot more than just emulation mode but sub and I made some changes to allow it to bypass these other options if you don't want them. See this thread for more info http://forums.nextpvr.com/showthread.php?t=36528

I did find that post and your thoughts on using MVP with digital, I didn't really understand why you thought it was a bad combo? What is actually happening that makes it bad?

Did some more reading yesterday and I am starting to understand what you've done with MVPMC. Is emulation mode better than a standard Haupp dongle, i.e. if I was to ignore the extra options on the front end and only use emulation mode would I see any advantage? I ask more out of curiosity (more toys = more things to break).

Anyway once wifey gets out of bed I'll stick some logs up.

Thanks

I have only been using mvpmc for about a month (since Martin & sub made the quick easy install) & I said my first thought about it were WOW & now a month later I would say WOW WOW WOW.....even the WAF went up since I started using it & there is NO way I want to go back to the Hauppauge dongle now, even though I can by just going into config & selecting it instead of mvpmc...so it isn't really like "more toys = more things to break"

I am now at the stage of wondering what else it can do & is it worth me trying to set it up with the share/config etc. & what advantages will I get from it?

See here for some example configurations One of the examples is mine where I use mvpmc outside GBPVR for playing webradio on my standard audio equipment.

The logs basically look the same as for Steeb, there is not enough data being captured fast enough to provide a good video stream, BBC1 wasn't great the first time either.

- I don't like digital live tv for several reasons, although it probably is better in the UK but I can't test that. Some of my concerns.

- hardware analog encoding provides a more consistent stream
- digital often means a mix of HD and SD
- h264 when applicable, cannot be decoded on the fly, and getting it to work at all on the MVP impedes everything
- here in the N.A. digital means AC3 audio and the hoops required to transcode on the fly don't give satisfactory results.
- mvpmc can do AC3 but handling of sync is not good, in addition toggling between AC3 and mp2 audio in live tv is not automatic.

The following able more to digital recordings in general

- GBPVR users use different muxes and different versions of muxes because of variations in standards there is no "Gold" standard.
- to ethically have a copy of the muxes on my machine, I have to litter up my computer with expired and non-working software

Thanks for taking a look at the logs, I might have to pass this one over to Sub but do you know what could cause this...therefore I can judge if I am wasting my time trying to fix it, or there are more things I can tinker with.

I may be completley off track, but my aerial setup is not fantastic would a better aerial make any difference or do you think a different capture card might be better......

I have a dvb-s sat car in the server as well as the Haupp Nova T500, interestingly I have not really noticed the issue on sat channels.

hmmmm, this has got me thinking, I could add another cap card in the pc to see if its any better, but I dont think there would be any way to tell the MVP to prioritse which cap card to use.....

ahhh the highs and lows of being a gbpvr user....

Things have improved a bit with MVPMC, but still having some crashes.
I would like sub to have a look at the logs to see if he can suggest a possible root cause:

Sub where are you Wink
