can you elaborate on the audio/video decoders? My system has a 3 ghz processor with 1gb ddr2 memory and agp video card but can't remember how much memory that has.

Machine be ok then.

What audio and video decoders do you have selected on the playback tab? If its video is not smooth, then the first suggestion is to not use 'system default'.

I have system default on both audio/video. I guess just cycle through the options until I find the best one?

Yep, and if you dont have any good ones, then install other ones.

If you want decoder recommendations, I dont have any for you. There is plenty of discussion in the past on this, so do a forum search. It varies from machine to machine, and different hardware, and different broadcast source.

Sub,

I also have an HVR-850. I've been trying to get it to work but am having a little difficulty. Here's my troubleshooting thus far:

  1. Install HVR-850 Drivers

  2. Install GB-PVR

  3. I tried to see if it detected the device automatically by going to Config » Capture Sources » Add » Digital Recording Plugin » Settings, and checking "Only show devices detected in this machine."

    RESULT: No cards detected.

  4. I next tried modifying the bda.ini file per your instructions.

    [Hauppauge HVR-850]
    TUNING_TYPE=ATSC
    FILTER_TUNER=WinTV HVR-850 BDA Tuner
    FILTER_CAPTURE=WinTV HVR-850 BDA Capture
    PIN_TUNER_IN=Input0
    PIN_TUNER_OUT=MPEG2 Transport
    PIN_CAPTURE_IN=MPEG2 Transport
    PIN_CAPTURE_OUT=MPEG2 Transport

    RESULT: Still no device detected.

  5. I then ran FilterCheck.exe and took a look at the FilterCheck.log file. I compared mine with the FilterCheck.log file that mpadilla2 posted and noticed some differences. The strangest difference was that FilterCheck shows that it is a HVR-950. I went back to Windows Device Manager and found that it was indeed an HVR-850. So, I trusted FilterCheck and tried to modify the bda.ini file based on my version of FilterCheck. This time though, instead of adding the info for the HVR-850, I actually overwrote the HVR-950 section in the file.

    RESULT: Device is detected!

  6. I then tried to let it go through and detect channels. It detected 16 channels. The strange thing is it does not show a preview in any of the channel mapping windows of the config utility.

  7. With the channels mapped, I then closed down the config utility and tried running GB-PVR.

    RESULT: When I go to LiveTV I get a message that says, "No tuners are available to watch the requested channel. You can choose to watch one of the currently recording programmes." My only option at this screen is "Don't watch TV"

This is where I am stuck. My card seems to be detected, and picks up channels, but I never see any video anywhere and LiveTV tells me no tuners are available.

My FilterCheck.log (changed to .txt extension) file is attached. Do you have any suggestions?

Thanks,
Luke

What decoders do you have selected? If 'system default', then try something else.

Reproduce the problem then zip and attach the logs and I'll take a look.

Ah,

So GBPVR relies on codecs installed by Power DVD, VLC, Intervideo, etc. to decode the ATSC video from the tuner? That could be the problem since I don't have even a DVD program installed on the system. (I thought I would start trying to get this thing to work with basically just a fresh system. It's pretty much XP SP3 and the HVR 850 driver.)

My options for decoders are as follows:
MPEG 2 Playback

Video Decoder - System Default or MPEG Video Decoder
Audio Decoder - System Default or MPEG Audio Decoder

Everything under Advanced Codec is limited to System Default.
None of this changes anything either. What's the best way to get the right codecs on my system? (I'm trying to install a minimum amount of software on it to keep it running smooth)

My logs are attached.

Thanks,
Luke

Yes, GB-PVR depends on you supplying the audio/video decoders.

AC3Filter would be an audio decoder that would do the job for your audio decoder. I'm not sure what to suggest in the way of free video decoders that cope with HD. A lot of people use commercial decoders like the Cyberlink one etc. Maybe try ffdshow or MPV Decoder or similar.

Hi,
I cannot get the Hauppauge 850 to find any digital broadcast channels using GBPVR. I can however easily find many channels with vista media center. I have tried to add the settings that Sub suggested earier in this thread but I could not map my digital channels, it said that no device was found. I also then tried the settings that tabasckoluke suggested and I could get into the 'map digital channels' setting, but it wouldnt find any channels during the scan. I know that I can receive the channels because it works in vista media center. Help me! I've attached the logs, filterchecker, and dba.ini settings.
