By using H264 TS Cutter v111 - http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=128476 - you can at least cut the pre and post padding and credits from your recordings, and you can strip out unwanted PIDS like the audio narrative (Options - PID filter). A typical 30-minute recording can be reduced from 4.5gb to 3.5gb - not a bad saving in hard drive space, and it only takes a few minutes.
I tried AutoMKV as suggested earlier in this thread, but after 3 hours of intensive hard-drive activity and both CPU cores running at 100% I ended up with my 30-minute 16:9 BBC HD recording being reduced to a 750mb 4:3 SD MKV file, with the audio about 1 second out of sync! The video quality was fantastic though, and I am sure the resolution could be sorted out, but I found several threads indicating audio sync is a major problem with AutoMKV.
I am puzzled as to how, within an hour or so of broadcast, torrents appear that are super-quality 720p transcodes of HD TV shows. A 720p MKV of my HD recordings would be great. But until there is an easy solution that does not require my PC to puff & pant for hours on end, I tend to agree the best solution is to add more storage capacity!
