Drobo??? I had to google that one.
It looks to me they are rather expensive wrt GB/$. With the current hdd prices they could be cheaper I think or am I missing something.

yeah they are expensive, well about 150% the price of a 4 bay raid 5 device in nz (raid 5 was about $750 drobo was $1100, nzd).

but they are worth it, a lot less operational hassle than raid 5, and can swap drives in and out easily (work fine with different sized drives, and maximises the space available, raid5 just makes available 3x the size of the smallest drive).

so yeah i have about 3 TB in that, plenty of room for my movies (well for now)

no, thats just for the drobo itself

yeah i know its really expensive, but better than the alternatives, its a really cool device, im glad i bought it, ive got 2x1.5tbs, 1 1tb and 1 750gb in it, ill upgrade the 750 and 1tb to 2tbs when they come out and drop below the $200nzd mark.
the fact that you can pull out a hard drive, put in a large one, and it maximises the space you have is just too good to pass up, raid5 doesnt do that, so upgrading drives would have been a PITA.

oh the only down side is that its not a NAS, you have to pay anothe $400nzd for the droboshare (was better when the american dollar was so crap.)

i hate that i ticked the new zealand box and it still took me to a usa site

thats expensive i dont think i need one that much but it does look like a cool device

i just needed it cos i was backing up all my dvds to hdd, and didnt want them spanning lots of drives. yeah they're us$400, hard to find a place to sell them to nz, best i found was expansys

Speaking of massive libraries of videoes, will there be an import function for the existing mdb file?

Also, when you asked what the new version should have, one thing I think it would be good to keep is keeping the link to IMDB (and other external links) in an user-accessible file like it is now (or in the GB settings file). While you were gone, it allowed us to fix that when the link changed.

And the new look is really slick. It more than brings it up to date. Great work so far.

nope, the database is completely different and that plugin hasnt been updated in like 2.5 years, also that was "My Videos" this one is "Videos" (i renamed it so people wouldnt expect it to upgrade from "My Videos"). but i suppose someone could write a program to import that data

all the metadata info (thetvdb, imdb, themoviedb) is in the open source gbpvrlibrary project, so if i leave for some reason someone can update that dll and just replace it. also all the configuration of those lookups are done in a external xml configuration file (like my vids 5, just done a lot better - you can dynamically add a new source - eg someone could add ofdb and it would automatically show up).

My files are spread over 4 drives, without the .lnk file will there be a way to group them in the config for Videos (like providing multiple paths for every logical folder as opposed to 1:1 mapping)? Thanks.

not in the first alpha, but it will be in the final version.
