Two issues with new system

With the Digital cut-over in the U.S. looming (now postponed) I decided to build a new system. I purchased a Dell Studio (Vista Home Premium) and a Hauppauge 2250. I was running 1.03.07 on my old system and client, so I installed the same version on my new system. The installation went fine. I discovered that there was no audio when playing back recordings on the main system, but there was audio when playing the same recording on the client PC.

I did some checking on the forum and found an entry in the 1.03.11 survival guide that said there was a patch that might fix the lack of audio problem. I decided to upgrade both systems to 1.03.11. I also applied the patch. Not only did this not fix my problem, now when I try to exit from Live TV GBPVR hangs on the main system. It only hangs when exiting Live TV. Problem number 1. The client PC (also running 1.03.11) does not hang when exiting Live TV.

Putting the hang problem aside for a moment, I compared the two systems and found that the Dell came with the Cyberlink codec and I have the Intervideo codec on the client. I installed the Intervideo on the main system. Now I get audio when playing recordings, but now the volume is quite a bit lower than it was with the Cyberlink codec. Problem number 2. This is a probem because I have to turn up the TV volume so much, that I start to get a hiss. Is there a way to boost the volume for the Intervideo codec? I used the Hauppauge Tweak tool on my original system to set the volume to maximum. Does the tweek tool work on the 2250 or is there a registry setting?

Any help on resolving will be greatly appreciated.

I've done a little more testing and have narrowed in on the problem. It seems to be a combination of the video renderer and the decoder.

In order to use the Intervideo decoder, I have to set the video renderer to VMR9 Custom. The DVD playback works but the selected menu item is not highlighted. The Corel Intervideo Xpack that I have is from 2005. I don't see any version information on their site, but it looks like the version they have has new features from the one that I have.

In order to get the Cyberlink decoder to work, I have to set the video renderer to Overlay. If I do that the Live TV will hang on exit (this started when I upgraded from 1.3.7 to 1.3.11), but I can see the menu items highlighted. I tried removing 1.3.11 and reinstalling 1.3.7, but I'm getting an error on install when I try to put 1.3.7 back on. Fortunately, made a copy of 1.3.11, so I was able to restore that copy and get 1.3.11 working again.

I have tried the various DVD navigator settings, but the above two combinations are the only two that seem to work. At this point, it appears there are only two options that will work. Either I get Live TV and no DVD menu highlights, or DVD menu highlights but Live TV hangs on exit.

I don't mind buying a different decoder, but I don't want to buy any that won't work. Does anyone know much of a difference the video card makes in relationship to the decoders?

Did you apply the patches from the survival guide? One of those patches resolve a problem like this.

I applied a patch, but I'm not sure I applied the patch that addresses my problem. The one I applied was psi-patch.zip. The files in the patch are GBPVRTSMon.ax (2/8/2009), GBPVRTSReader.ax (2/5/2009) and PsiParser.ax (2/5/2009).

That patch fixed the problems. Now, if only I can figure out how to get the volume up a little, the new system will be perfect. Thanks a million Sub!
