I've been messing with setting up a PC client for quite some time now. I'm testing now with the living room PC as the server and our office PC as the client. Both machines are well capable of playing HD video but I've never quite been able to get the client to play recordings smoothly. Any combination of muxes or decoders never seemed to do the trick. So last night I bring home an extra long cat5 cable and run it across the living room to the study and plug it into the network switch. Then the magic happened. I could watch all the recordings smooth as silk. I even watched a recording and started live tv in the living room at the same time and no hiccups. Loading the tv guide on the client, which took 5 mins before, was almost instantaneous. So the good news is I know I can get it working. I just don't relish the idea of having to crawl thruough the attic to drop another cable.

Problem:
I would like to get a client to be able to use live TV as well as watch recordings if at all possible. I got live tv working on the client using the TS Mux, however, I recorded a few minutes of a show and the playback of the recording was just too jumpy using file sharing mode. Recordings play back fine using the DVR-MS mux but of course live TV does not work.

Question:
Is it possible to get both live tv and view recordings on a PC client?

If you got this far, thanks for reading.

Live tv and recordings should both work well with TS Mux and file sharing mode. They have in my experiments. (I'm talking wired, not wireless)

Ok, so I also noticed that there are two options, one that says TS Mux and the other says FULL TS. Are they talking about the same thing or are the completely different? Would one be bettter than the other?

I'll try and do more testing tonight.

The Full TS option isnt for normal use. Its only really there to help people collected information for me to debug problems. You'd need to use the 'TS Mux' option.

Live TV works great on my client on a wired 100MB network with the TS mux, however, I only get good recordings 50% of the time. The other half the playback is just awfully bad and seems to skip a frame every other second. The audio still seems to be good though and continues without any problems. This seems to happen with the Cyberlink mux as well but I have not done as much testing with it.

I know generally people have had better success useing the DVR-MS mux for US ATSC signals but I would like the live TV option for my client machine as well. I'm using the Purvideo decoder, is there possibly any settings that could help with this or is it the recording of the file that could be the problem? I did a defrag to see if that would help the issue but had no luck after it completed either.

If you copy the file to the machine, does it play smoothly from the video library?

I'm playing it back from the server as well and it performs the same. Not from the video library but from the recordings menu.

I've also tried changing the order of recording preference, ie. the order in which they are listed in config, thinking that maybe one of my tuners was not able to record correctly but it did not seem to make any difference.

If you can supply a 40MB chunk of the recording, I'll try playing it here. You can cut the chunk from the file using this utility: http://forums.gbpvr.com/showpost.php?p=3...ostcount=2

Sorry Sub,

We've had alot of recordings going on and I didn't want to interfere with them. This should be a link to a 40mb file of a recording using the ts mux that when played is all sorts of choppy. I've never used this file sharing site before so I don't know if it will work.

Bump,

Just in case you haven't seen the file posted sub. I'm running fine with the client using the DVR-MS mux for playing back recordings and movies from the video library. I'm going to play around with the cyberlink mux some this weekend if I have the time.

Does the Mux selected have to be the same for the client and the server or does the client selection not come into play at all? I've always changed them to be the same when testing.
