Before transmission the broadcaster breaks the digital channels (and supporting data) into thousands of little 188 byte packets. When these packets are received by the capture device, it passes them through a mux filter to reassemble them into a format that can be saved to disk and later played back...

Yes. Some timing information is lost when the broadcast is broken into these 188 byte packets. This isnt a problem when you're just watching tv and its going straight to the screen since you can assume each packet is due to be displayed as it arrives. It is more of a problem if you try to save that data to disk for later playback. The mux filter has to try to reconstruct that timing from other info contained in the stream, but it is complex and a lot of things can contribute to the mux not quite getting it right.

Thanks i tried the various muxes listed earlier in here - and the ATI mux is definitely performing better than the cyberlink one i previously had... still early days yet - will see how some of the longer recordings cope with the playback ...

With all the timing problems I've seen with tv recordings that don't happen with live TV I have always wondered why someone doesn't invent a format that records the data coming in with timestamps based on the pcs clock.
Then regardless of the errors in the received data, playback can always keep going in correct time as does live tv.

Hi

I have just installed GB_PVR and I am working throught the issues. Thanks for these forums. The last step I hope will be to get GBPVR to see a mux. I have copies of the CyberLinks. Some basic questions please. Which is best now. Are the higher version numbers the latest i.e. ppMpgMux(5.0.0.3608) is latest.

Where do you put the mux - system32 or anywhere.

The broadcast TV I want to watch and record is different to most posters here in that it is broadcast in HD MPEG4 (part10) rather than MPEG2. (I have a H.264 codec.) Does this make a difference.

Vista Home premium, Hauppauge 1200, dual GT9800s.

H.264 channels are always recorded with the TS Mux. Third party muxes like the Cyberlink/ATI/DVR-MS mux are only used when you're dealing with MPEG2 channels.

You can download it from http://www.gbpvr.com/MuxChecker.zip

This returns 404 - is there a new location to download muxchecker from?

thanks

Doh.
Thank you, I was trying various forum searches to try and get my Hauppauge WinTV Nova TD 500 working and thought it may be a mux problem. I have at least managed to get it to scan channels now but I dare say I may still need this program as I move forward (especially as it reports none found :-( )
