Recently I had to upgrade my system to continue using xmltv (0.5.55) using the Radio Times data and GBPVR (1.3.11) - it was two years since my previous update - if it aint broke dont fix it.

Mostly it all works but for the first time I have noticed that gbpvr stops importing the listing information when it comes across a £ symbol in the description (it also stoped when trying to put in the degree's symbol a couple of weeks ago). If I take out the rogue symbols from the listing.xml file and update the EPG all is well.

Is anyone else having this problem? -is there a easy fix

I use this to grab Radio Times data

http://www.birtles.org.uk/xmltv/

It doesn't have hiccups over odd characters. They appear in the TV Guide with £quot around them which is messy but not messy enough for me to have done anything to fix it.

Good Luck

I have the same issue - which I didn't have with xmltv 0.5.54. After my reinstall, I deleted my xmltv stuff and forgot to backup, so today installed 0.5.55 and have the issue above which is very annoying.

BigMoose - it happened on 0.5.54 as well. I upgraded to 0.5.55 in the hope the problem went away.

Does anyone else have problems importing Channel 4 at the moment - nothing after 9:00pm on March 26th? - what is the correct way to represent the £ symbol in a xml file - is this a GBPVR problem or a XMLTV problem or a config problem?

the current problem entry follows:

<programme start="20090326210000 +0000" stop="20090326220000 +0000" channel="channel4.com">
<title>Trophy Kids</title>
<desc lang="en">It's hard competing at the top level, and harder still if you're trying to get your child into the top echelon of sport. "Without the parent, the kid is worthless," declares brutal, £200-an-hour tennis coach Robert Landsdorp, who moulded Tracy Austin and Pete Sampras. Here, he's working with 12-year-old Eden from Essex, but not as hard as her dad, Roger. In this gem of a documentary, the father and daughter are just one of four partnerships who believe sporting glory is within their reach. But this Cutting Edge film isn't about the prodigies; it's more about their dads' unrelenting push for success. All for the sakes of the kids, of course. It's not always easy to judge how well the youngsters are coping with the pressure, but it's safe to say their fathers are losing the struggle. One youngster, Lee, cries because, he says, his family are only in it for the money. "All I'm bothered about is Lee's happiness. Nothing else," says his dad, through Lee's tears. It's a stunning scene in a revealing film, which is worth a place on the podium itself. Radio Times reviewer - Geoff Ellis</desc>

I knew I'd downloaded and had no problem with the EPG within the last 2 weeks and unless C4 updated the description recently to include the £ I thought I was going mad. But no! Change the character set to ISO 8859-1 and the problem with that C4 prog goes away - you get a ? instead of the £ which isn't ideal. That said, it's still not quite right as it's not loaded much more than before....

I gave up and installed XMLTVGUI as highlighted by Graham. Seems to work fine - except it calls all the BBC channels something different so I have to remap them all and delete the crap I dont want. But that's just a minor (if time consuming) annoyance.

One thing I dont get though is XMLTV GUI doesn't seem to do the channel logos, is that right or have I missed somewhere how to do it??

I used some utilty to get logos. I think it was this one ...

Entries in the forum suggest that it is still being supported.

I tried character ISO 8859-1 in the config file - it changed the £ symbol to ? but then nothing imported at all.

I then swaped back to UTF-8 and the £ symbol is now shown as a rectangle and all imports perfectly - perhaps RT have changed their entry - or perhaps it was user error - either way it appears to be working for the moment.

I would probably install SED for windows and add a line in my batch file to pipe the data through SED to clean up everything that causes me grief.

Not sure of the syntax at the moment, but it is not complicated. I was using SED to change display names and such before I discovered xmltvalter.exe
