No video w/Hauppauge WinTV-350

GB-PVR looks great, much better than WinTV2000, but I am using an S-video connection from the Hauppauge breakout cable to my TV and I can't get any picture. Audio seems fine. Did I miss something in the setup or will GB-PVR not send to the S-video on the WinTV-350?

Did you select "Huappauge PVR350" in the hardware decoder setting?

I did. I also tracked the problem down. It seems WinTV2000 uses the same video output as Windows (ATI 9100 video card). The Hauppauge card offers the option to feed video out the breakout cable or to the video card. GB-PVR seems to use the Hauppauge's A/V output connector with no option to use OS's out.

In my case this means that I am feeding a high-quality S-video signal from Windows to my TV and a relatively crappy composite out from the TV tuner to the television set. The TV picture leaves a lot to be desired, but Windows looks spectacular!

I think I'm going to have to come up with a monitor for the Shuttle. I hate the idea of spending $200 for a 15" flat panel LCD, but I can't find a source on a smaller, cheaper option.

Sorry, but you've got the wrong end of the stick. The hardware MPEG2 decoder on the PVR350 is only "wired" to the tv output connector on the back of the PVR350.

When WinTV2000 is playing video on your ATI9100, this is entirely software decoding. This is the same as when you set the 'Hardware decoder' setting in GB-PVR to 'None.

What WinTV does offer that GB-PVR doesnt, is the option to software decode to you ATI9100 at the same time as it hardware decodes to the PVR350 TV out connector. GB-PVR let you do both of these things, but you have to choose one or the other.

Okay, I selected no hardware decoder as you suggested and I can now see video in a window via my S-video cable. Unfortunately, no audio. How do I configure GB-PVR to send my audio to the PVR350? I've tried all the Audio decoder and rendering options under the Playback tab in the config. utility.

With GB-PVR you have to use one or the other, the PVR350 output, or view via the software decoder + default system audio device (which is not the PVR350). In effect you have to use a sound card, or have onboard sound on your motherboard.

I'm trying to find more details about all this, but it seems that in order for me to get audio with no hardware MPEG decoding, I will need to get a stereo cable and patch out of the sound card into the audio input of the PVR350.

Of course, all this should be moot given the presence of a home theater amplifier connected to the Shuttle's (sound card's) SPDIF out port. I am tempted to just go buy another home theater system and Ebay the unit at my local retailer.
