Unable to get WinTV-HVR-1100 Remote Control to work

Hi,

I am using WinTV-HVR-1100:

and base on this documentation:

I have set it to HaupBlast.exe, but it's still not working (I have also tried enabling the IR program that comes with WinTV but still not working)

However the remote is working with WinTV (the application that comes with the capture card).

The HaupBlast.exe/Channel Changer stuff is about controlling an external set top box using an IR Blaster, which isnt what you want to do. Your capture source channel changer should be set to 'none'.

To get the remote to work, in the config app, set the remote type to 'Hauppauge' and click the 'Fix Hauppauge Remote Settings' button, then restart the Hauppauge IR32.exe utility.

For the TV recordings, it's currently recording in TS format which is huge. Is there a way to ask it record directly into mpeg format?

I also noticed it will take about 1.5 hours to encode an hour of TS into DIVX format. Is it normal?

It all depends on your computer, the encoder and the profile you use.

My P4 2 GHz machine in single pass would transcode a 1 hr show in 0.5 hours using mencoder and a very simple conversion profile. The picture was just barely sufficient for an old 27 inch CRT. Since getting a newer CRT I've upped the bitrate from 700 kb/s to 1200 kb/s as the picture quality of the tube got "better"

The size of the recordings will depend on the bitrate your broadcaster is using. Recording to .mpg would be pretty much the same size. (maybe about 2% smaller)

Oh? Before I migrate the tuner card to this PC, an hour show would take roughly 3GB in MPEG format. Now it's 7GB in TS format.



btw, I am noticing that playing MKV video files will not show the SUB subtitle, while when I play it in windows media player it will show.

if there is different subtitle available, is it possible to ask gbpvr to select English as default?

The .ts files GB-PVR records is just a dump of the digital packets your broadcaster is transmitting. About 95% of this is the audio and video for the channel. If you remux to a .mpg, the bitrate of those original audio and video streams are unchanged, so they're effectively the same audio/video packets and they'll still take up as much space. There would be a small bit of space reclaimed non-audio/video section of the file, but its only a couple of percent.

The size will vary from channel to channel, and is determined by the bitrate the broadcaster is using for that channel.

Transcoding these recordings would reduce the space, but would also reduce the quality, and consume a lot of CPU and time in the process. Disk space is cheap these days - I'd recommend just sticking with the original high-quality streams the broadcaster is transmitting.

GB-PVR doesnt know anything about .mkv files. It just askes Windows to play this type of file, and windows take care of the rest. This includes subtitles. There is no build in support for subtitles in this situation. If you get subtitles at all, or the default language for the subtitle, it'd have to be configured outside of GB-PVR in whatever software or components Windows uses for playback of those files.

That's what I thought regarding the subtitles. But playing in Windows Media Player and I can get subtitles coming up. hmmmm, I'll try it again.
