LowEntropy Wrote:(1) there are certain terms and descriptions that just do not map to what I see on the interfaces (e.g. press rescan...there's no such option/button where I've been looking, click the "Map digital channels to EPG channels" button...it has never been active/enabled (i.e. grayed out) in my config screen

Ok, now things are starting to make sense. Have you set up an EPG source? By "rescan", we mean press the "Map digital..." button again.

Steps to set up an digital tuner:
  1. Add Capture source.
  2. Configure device.
  3. Configure EPG source (or add channels manually for no epg).
  4. Map channels to EPG channels.
See http://gbpvr.com/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Confi...HDTVSource for a walkthrough.

I'm beginning to understand a bit more of what's going on - I need a correct entry for my bda.ini file for my HVR 1950 device. I knew how to add a capture source in the GBPVR config but, like a bonehead, I wasn't seeing that the type of recording source wasn't "direct" it was BDA. Once I have the correct entry for the HVR 1950 I can add the BDA recording source and do my rescan/mapping.....I hope you guys are still out there...thanks,BGD

We're still here, don't worry. You should have "Hauppauge HVR 1950 (QAM)" in the list already. If not, there will be a bda entry somewhere in the forums here.

If you have any problems or question, just ask.

you would be wise to upgrade to 1.3.11 with the survival guide patches. the bda.ini included with that version already has the HVR-1950. sub has made a lot of changes since 1.0.16 (that was 5 or 6 releases ago, at least...)

However, if you insist on staying with 1.0.16, here are the needed bda.ini entries:

Code:
[Hauppauge HVR-1950 (ATSC)]
TUNING_TYPE=ATSC
FILTER_TUNER=Hauppauge HVR USB2 BDA Tuner/Demod
FILTER_CAPTURE=Hauppauge HVR USB2 TS Capture
PIN_TUNER_IN=Input0
PIN_TUNER_OUT=MPEG2 Transport
PIN_CAPTURE_IN=MPEG2 Transport
PIN_CAPTURE_OUT=MPEG2 Transport

[Hauppauge HVR-1950 (QAM)]
TUNING_TYPE=ATSC
TUNING_SPECIAL=2
FILTER_TUNER=Hauppauge HVR USB2 BDA Tuner/Demod
FILTER_CAPTURE=Hauppauge HVR USB2 TS Capture
PIN_TUNER_IN=Input0
PIN_TUNER_OUT=MPEG2 Transport
PIN_CAPTURE_IN=MPEG2 Transport
PIN_CAPTURE_OUT=MPEG2 Transport

Thank you for the HVR 1950 entries - I plugged them into the ini file and I was able to define the capture source and do a few scans. I tried scanning using the long list of possible frequencies and also a number of scans with a handful of frequencies (incremented by 6000). I feel my scans were done correctly (everything looked good) but yet no channels turn up. I'm pretty confident that my DTA is different than the ones mentioned in the postings I've found (e.g. there is no info button to hold down to get frequency data, there is no model number anywhere on the unit or documentation). Is it possible that I cannot get (parse?) individual channels out of the feed from the unit? Just thought I'd throw that out. BGD

Just to be sure, you have your cable hooked directly to your HVR-1950? You shouldn't have the DTA connected first.

Johnsonx42 - yes, absolutely. The cable connection feeds into the DTA unit and the DTA feeds the HVR1950 tuner. The switch in the back of the DTA is set to channel 3. Using WinTV, I can see any channel I select on the DTA using the comcast/DTA remote control. Part of the question I had previously posted concerns what signal/data is passed from the DTA to the HVR1950. That is, if the DTA is set to channel 8 (using the remote) then I see channel 8 on WinTV (via the HVR1950). But does this imply that there is a narrower band of frequencies/data being passed to the HVR1950 tuner? And, if so, wouldn't this limit what the scanning would find on the GBPVR side? There are definitely concepts underlying these operations which I just don't know so I could be way off on my read of this. Thanks, BGD

No, I think you misunderstood. johnsonx42 is saying that you should remove the DTA altogether. The cable goes from the wall directly to your Hauppauge. You'll be using the HVR-1950's digital QAM tuner to interpret the digital TV signals, instead of the DTA's. That QAM.ini data which he gave you is telling your Hauppauge device how to tune the digital channels.

I don't have that option since my PVR-150 is a much older analog-only device.

I think you have misread Johnsonx42. He wants you to eliminate the DTA entirely and connect the cable to the HVR1950, not the DTA.

Only the channel the DTA is tuned to.

Yes.

Assuming your digital data is not encrypted Qam, you don't need the DTA.

What they said. The 1950 should relpace the DTA altogether.
