After the depressing vibe from my last post I'd thought I'd cheer myself up and ask you guys the reason you bother with HPTC / GB-PVR?

Is there a particular feature or features you love or is it just one big geekfest?

Personally, I like the "all-in-one" aspect of an HTPC along with the customisation options (even more so being a dev) and as far as the WAF is concerned the ease of use and GB of recording space.

Also, the fact that I can have multi-tuner harddisk based recording and can pause live TV without paying for a Sky+ DVR or similar Smile

You can't beat the price. No software, hardware, or subscription costs. Also, the customer support is phenomenal.

Thanks Sub!

I originally was looking at video capture to transfer video to DVD, and ended up liking the idea of using my computer as a DVR. I also figured it would save me the cost of buying or renting a cable company DVR.

Haven't regretted it at all.

Since I got fios w/ a dvr, it's not about TV anymore. But, even as a simple playback interface for all of our stored video, it's still proves to be invaluable and used daily. I'm glad accessing any video on demand will probably be as simple for our kids when they grow up, as we've made it seem w/ our GB setup.

While my wife still records her soaps and I a movie or TV show once in a while, it's using streaming music to MVP's to be used as sources for the Whole house audio system, and having a user interface at any TV to control it that floats my boat.

1) disk space - on baseball game just about fills my cable co's DVR
2) multi-room viewing - with the PCH, I can start in one room & finish in another.

A few years ago I had a 5-piece HI-FI separates system and two Video recorders in the lounge with extension speakers and aerial sockets in various other rooms - cables, VHS tapes, CDs, Cassettes, Vinyl everywhere - what a mess. I started off by looking at replacing the VCRs with a Topfield or a Humax, then I came across GB-PVR.

Now I've got two headless servers up in the attic and MVPs on each TV - all my music, videos and photos digitised - no clutter - no missing tapes - WAF sky high...

The best bit - centralised media management with everything delivered through one small box. Plus, this has to be the most knowledgable, friendly and helpful community there is...

***The WAF (Woman Acceptance Factor) is concerned***

All true! I personally had the geek in me to experiment something different. I don't like subscriptions, but loves to have a DVR, so with my basic TIVO with subscription for live I do all my recordings, but it was time to get something better.
I wanted a solution to host all my movies/videos,pictures,music, looked at mediaportal, xbmc and GBPVR. One of my main factors was that I wanted a windows enviroment. There are some linux opensource htpc out there, but didn't wanted to go there.

Basically GBPVR does the Job, but sometimes it is frustating when something you configured and tested stop working, like when playing a DVD.
