how to auto convert HDPVR .ts to mp4 1280x720 in gbpvr?

I know there are a few HDPVR users recording HDTV so I am looking for info on how you are converting your .ts recordings in pvrx2?

I have seen some bluray rips converted to h264 1280x690 at 23.975 fps bitrate 1,536 kb/s 1:53 hours that look great and have a file size of 1,570 megs

Is there a mencoder of ffmpeg command line that you are using in gbpvr that will do something like this?

I cant really see the point in converting your recordings. If I were you I'd just leave them in their original .ts format.

If you want transcode them to some other resolution/framerate/bitrate, you'll consume huge amount of CPU and time, lose some quality, for the saving of some disk space. Disk space is cheap these days, and I'd rather have the highest quality, and the encoding done by the HD-PVR hardware encoding at recording time.

Thanks sub. The picture quality of the HDPVR is pretty amazing. I wish I could keep the recordings but I am running out of hard drive space so I would love to have the option to convert the recording to .mp4 at the above specs since I was amazed at the picture quality and file size was great at 1,570 megs.

I know it will take many hours to convert and I will transfer the recording to my quad core for testing. It is a fun hobby to learn these things and is best when nothing is on tv haha.

The HD-PVR are already compressed x264 files, handbrake is more for standard files.

A 1.5 MB HD file is going to be DVD quality whether it is xvid or mkv(h264) and these can look nice but not nearly HD. Therefore If you are looking for profiles that save space look for ipod or dvd but it's going to take time. 1 TB drives are about 90$ here now, I agree with sub, why bother.

I have a dct6200 and can't locate something to limit output to 720p so I am not sure where to go...

The HD-PVR always encodes to the same video standard as is received from the source.

You'll be getting 24fps from blu-ray rips since this is framerate used for film, and what is used on blu-ray disks.

I'm not familiar with the various set top box models over there, but most of them have a setting to force the output to a certain standard (since there are some TVs that dont do 720p or 1080i).

martint123 thanks for the handbreak tip. I compressed an hour long video from HDTV down to 1280x690 at 23.975 fps bitrate 1,536 kb

Video looks great and file size went from 3,663 megs to 744megs

Took about one hour and 15 minutes to encode the one hour clip on a q6600.

Going to do it now on the cult concert I just recorded

Now if I can figure out how handbreak does it and get it into a command line I will try it on the dual core pvr and see if it kills it or if the pvr runs fine while encoding.

It is either power off and immediately hit the ok/select button or power off and menu. One is the diagnostics menu and the other gives you the output format.
