.ts file sizes larger than in 1.3.11?

I have successfully upgraded to 1.4.7 about a week ago along with the latest HDHomerun code; everything went very smoothly. After letting it run for a week I noticed that I was starting to run low on disk space. Upon investigation I noticed that half hour recordings were taking about 800-900 megs each before in 1.3.11, but now are taking about 3.4 gigs each in 1.4.7.
Anyone else noticed this?

I recall reading something a long time ago about sending only the data I want to disk from the stream instead of the entire stream in .ts format, but I can't find anything like that in the config anywhere and I haven't found the post I remember yet.

BTW, I have it set to TS, not FULL TS.

I've not seen another comments indicating the same thing, and cant think of any reason the size would any different in 1.4.7 - unless the broadcaster is now using a higher bitrate for those channels than they were in the past. You'd find if you went back to 1.3.11, they'd be the same size.

I've never had a 1 hour file from an HDHR recorded show nearly as low as 900MB. Minimum for me is about 3gb for 1 hour recorded shows.

800-900 MB sounds like you were recording standard definition QAM previously. 3.5 GB for a hal hour show is about right for high definition.

I remember that I saw something similar, but it was going from analog signal to digital, sizes went up roughly what you are seeing.

Are you sure you're comparing apples to apples? There are a couple of independent channels where I am, not affiliated with any particular network, and while I don't record them often, I seem to recall the digital .ts files I got from their channels were tiny (is this what whurlston means by SD QAM?). But major networks transmitting mpeg2 .ts files here weigh in at around 7GB per hour.

Press Ctrl-O during playback of a recording (or preview mode liveTV):

640x480 or 720x540 (or similar) = SD = 1 to 2GB per hour
1280x720 = 720p HD = 4 to 6GB per hour
1920x1080 = 1080i HD = 5 to 7GB per hour

This is what I see on OTA. I've heard that cable companies tend to compress their streams a bit more so as to fit more streams on one channel, so you may get slightly smaller sizes with cable (but not much).

The TS Mux just records verbatim what the broadcaster sends.

In the states I've noticed that NBC has the highest quality streams. Last nights' 2 hour recording of Heroes with my HVR2250 was 13.2 GB!

I ended up recording Heroes in SD--given I was pretty disappointed with last season, didn't even bother to finish watching it. Sometimes when I record two HD programs at the same time...I guess my 2250's internal splitter just degrades the signal a little too much, and it goes downhill. So I recorded house (Fox) in HD, for the same 2 hour period, and it came in at 13.5GB (that little bit of difference is probably in the padding).

Fox, at least here, is 720p. I know there is at least one network, and maybe it's NBC, that does 1080i or p. I'd certainly think the higher resolution would result in larger .ts files for that station, but I don't recall any significant disparity between recording sizes on any of the major networks.

I'm assuming that the affiliates broadcast in whatever format they get from their networks. Here CBS and NBC are 1080i (sometimes 1080p as well), while ABC and Fox are 720p.

I do recall awhile back when I was first playing with GB-PVR on a test box, I recorded a 3 hour movie on one of the local 1080i channels, and it came in at over 9GB per hour. I've not seen such high bitrates lately though. I think that particular channel (KTLADT) probably dialed back their bitrate to something more reasonable to make room to carry ThisTV-SD on a sub-channel.
