Delayed Write Failed

I let my hard drive that I record to fill up the other day. I cleared s stuff out of it but now every time GBPVR tries to record something I get a "Delayed Write Failed" error. I see that microsoft support says to uncheck enable write caching on the disk but it has been running fine for a year or so and the microsoft article says that disabling that can effect drive performance. Is there any other culprit I should be looking for with that.

yes, that can also mean hard drive failure...
really it just means something prevented windows from writing to the drive for a really long time..most likely just surface errors..you can try a chkdsk w/surface scan [right click drive /tools/check disk, check both boxes] if it hangs, replace drive..

i strongly sugggest backing up that drive as soon as possible, then try reformatting and restoring the data...format will flush out errors usually...[don't do a quick format]...but be prepared to wait a while for it to finish a full one... [hours]

if there are critical errors, format won't finish...if so, i'd get another drive as it's now unreliable..

Thanks for the tips. Right now it seems to be reading ok from that drive it just can't write to it. I will have to figure out how to back things up. I have pretty well filled up all three 500gb drives. I've been meaning to build a server but I may have to look at purchasing an external drive I can back this individual drive to so i can do a format.

Another possiblity is the IDE controller(if IDE drive) has gone. Happened to me this week, DVD would not read, then hd just disappeared, put drive in another pc and all ok, have tried other HD/DVD drives, so by elimination the IDE controlled has failed.

Well apparently I was wrong. I can enter the drive and see the folders a nd files there but I can't copy them to move them somewhere else. I finally decided they were lost and tried to format but when I click on format Windows doesnt do anything and then I get the delayed write fail pop-up at the bottom of the screen. I really hope the drive isn't done completely.
