Vista VirtualStore and gbpvr.db3

I have been having trouble with the Vista VirtualStore copy of gbpvr.db3. I have fount that it is being created by PVRX2 everytime I remove it. Then when I use Config.exe to update the EPG the files become out of sync. Is anyone else experiencing this or know a way to avoid it?

This can be a hassle in Vista. Usually its ok on a clean install, but I do get the occasional report of problems with this.

Try deleting the virtual store version of gbpvr.db3, then changing the file permissions of the real gbpvr.db3 to writeable for all users and it should be ok.

I eventually intend to move the database, config.xml, plugin & skin directories out of the main install directory.

I just got bit by this bug on a Windows 7 machine. I was trying to delete all the TV Guide and Recording information and start fresh, but even after uninstalling and reinstalling the program and replacing or even deleting the db3 file in the program files directory it would still show all the old information. Finally did a search for *.db3 and noticed the a copy in "C:\Users\-\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\Devnz\GBPVR". Deleted it, set the permissions on the normal file to read/write for everyone and finally things started working as expected.

Having run GB-PVR on several Vista and Win7 machines, I found the work-arounds for this issue are more trouble than they're worth. Everytime I messed with something new, I'd get bitten by yet one more variation of this problem. I now just turn off User Account Control on any GB-PVR machine and don't worry about it any more. On a dedicated GB-PVR machine in particular, nothing UAC does for you is worth the headache.

Given that is a two year post! I should mention that after following sub's instructions, I have had no problems and running with UAC on is not an issue.

The biggest difficulty is resistance to change (same problem you have with 7zip perhaps!) and not UAC.

I had problems with UAC on Vista64 that weren't specfically this issue so turned it off and had no problems since. Absolutely no need for it on a dedicated PVR box, just caused unnecessary hassle.

Does W7 or Vista have Win98 lookalike mode ? I'm still running that in XP.

Just call me a luddite. I'm not looking forward to the change, should it be forced upon me.

@BigMoose I agree that UAC is not required on a dedicated server, but neither is a firewall or virus scanner. I don't think advising users to turn off security features is in general correct. To be honest I do it myself, in promoting a guest share on a home network for both mvpmc and mvpmcx2, but I think turning off UAC is much worse.

Sub's original idea to become a better Win7/Vista program and to move these files is still the best solution even if there is resistance to change by the majority of GBPVR users (based on a non-statiscal poll I called a month or so ago).

@martin123 you can still get a classic view to the desktop and explorer but some of the features like the admin tools use the new Win 6 (2008, Vista, Win7) look and feel.

@mvallend: I didn't notice this was an old thread resurrected by gbrayut (I hate when they do that). I'm glad you've been able to run with UAC on since then; I actually like UAC in general, and would prefer to keep it enabled if I could, but as BigMoose pointed out it's more than just the VirtualStore issue. One my setup for example I frequently edit skin files both on my local test client and on the server over the network, and I found with UAC on no amount of permissions editing would reliably let me edit those files in place. On my desktop I ultimately had to give up UAC for a couple of older programs that simply wouldn't work with UAC on, but doing so made GB-PVR much easier to deal with as well.

Regarding your poll, my vote was for moving the GB-PVR data appropriately, no resistance to change at all. Anyone who voted to leave things as they are just doesn't understand the problem.

If editing files across the network is simple, expand on sub's answer to address what you need. In developing web radio I opened up Plugins\WebRadio you could do the same for GBPVR and still leave UAC on.
