The Video Library screen allows you to browse and play video files incl avi.

I'm not sure what you mean, can you post a screenshot?

you can add the metadata yourself...just have to create the ads steam with notepad and enter the info in the correct format..[check wiki]
to create attachment, type "notepad yourfilename.avi:metadata.xml"

the format looks like:
Code:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<recording>
  <filename>E:\mpg\30 Rock\30 Rock_20091203_20302100.mpg</filename>
  <channel>2 KPRC</channel>
  <status>READY</status>
  <startTime>2009-12-03 20:30:00</startTime>
  <endTime>2009-12-03 21:00:00</endTime>
  <title>30 Rock *</title>
  <subtitle>Dealbreakers Talk Show No. 0001</subtitle>
  <description>(Thu, Dec 3, 2009) Production begins on Liz's new talk show, &quot;Dealbreakers&quot;; dealing with pressure from Devin, Jack tries to make &quot;Dealbreakers&quot; a success; Tracy tries to prove his commitment to his wife.

</recording>
just replace relevant parts with your info or delete data in fields that you don't have info for..
oh and create a 'yourfilename.jpg' in same dir for it to show as thumbnail...
use title for series name, and subtitle for individual show title...
and group them same series in same dir...
that's about as much as it can do..
[only works in video library]

you could also try the MovieWiz plugin..http://gbpvr.com/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Plugin/MovieWiz

There's a plugin that does it. MovieWiz might, as mentioned, but I think there's a different one. (or not.) You'll have to browse through that part of the wiki. I had problems getting it to fully work so gave up on it, but I know it works for other people.

I hate to say it, but if that doesn't work for you, xbmc might be what you're looking for for that if you can use both at the same time somehow. GBPVR is tops in recording TV and extenders and other areas, but, imo, if gbpvr did that metadata function as well as xbmc, it would rule the world.
I bet Michael Bay uses GBPVR because it's awesome:
