It's fine with any broadband speed. DNS caching is good on on dial up but you don't really need it on anything faster. If you are using good, fast DNS servers, it adds only milliseconds to the time and that is only for the initial visit to the site in that browser session.

gbpvr.com is broken! :eek:

The two primary nameservers are NS1.EVERYDNS.NET and NS2.EVERYDNS.NET (visible using any whois web page). If you do a lookup then a reverse lookup on them using your own ISP's DNS server or a web based DNS service you get this:
Code:
NS1.EVERYDNS.NET  --> 208.76.62.100
NS2.EVERYDNS.NET  <-- 208.76.62.100

NS2.EVERYDNS.NET <--> 78.129.207.168
The first nameserver points back to the second and the second points somewhere else that points back to the second. This violates RFC 1912 Section 2.1. There are web tools like dnswalk and dns sleuth to test these things in a more automated way but they seem to dislike gbpvr.com's problem so much that they hang when testing gbpvr.com.

sub, this is something worth fixing IMHO.

Sorry, but thats all greek to me. Where is the problem? ie, is it a problem with "gbpvr.com" domain name configuration (currently configured to use two name servers "NS1.EVERYDNS.NET" and "NS2.EVERYDNS.NET"), or is it a problem with something the EveryDNS service is doing?

Either way, none of this configuration has changed in years, and I've had no problems with it.

I'm no expert on this stuff either and don't know for sure if this particular problem is the source of the issues reported on this thread. The problem seems to be with the everydns.net name servers not with gbpvr.com specifically. For example, running DNS Sleuth on pwb.com (a random site that also uses everydns.net name servers) results in the same errors as on gbpvr.com.

If you are a paying customer of everyDNS maybe reporting it to them would prompt them to fix it. I can try to follow up with everyDNS to help out but not sure if they will ignore me since I'm not a direct user.

I'm not a paying customer. I'm just using their free DNS service.

Given I'm not seeing any problem, not sure what the problem description above means, and it doesnt seem to be affecting many users, I'm tempted to do nothing - but we'll see if someone else can provide more info.

@fla, what you are seeing on the IP lookups is common with name based virtual hosting especially with redundant IPs. The dnswalk and DNS sleuth issues are completely unrelated. The reason they are failing is because instead of performing simple dns lookups, they actually request a complete zone transfer. Many servers reject complete zone transfer requests except from authorized servers.

Oh I know about zone transfers failing (they fail instantly) and ignored that error but the violation I posted above is in the check zone basics part of DNS Sleuth. The hanging happens in the other advanced tests but will eventually timeout with lots of patience. Zone transfers, I agree, are not causing the errors on this thread.

sub, is gbpvr.com using any of the "advanced" features of EveryDNS like "dynamic" or just the basic stuff? Any way you could PM me a a screenshot of the gbpvr.com settings/records in everyDNS?

No, its not doing anything advanced:

*.gbpvr.com CNAME gbpvr.com
gbpvr.com A 76.76.102.42

just my $0.02
I still continue to experience regular problems accessing the forum directly as described in #1.

Sometimes I need to visit gbpvr.com before I can then get to forums.gbpvr.com, other times refreshing the page many times seems to fix it. I can't find a precise pattern only that when it wasn;t working, ipconfig /displaydns had no entry at all for http://www.gbpvr.com

I have never had this problem with any other site.

My DNS server is set to that of my router.

Not very enlightening I know but I do believe that there is something "odd" about how gbpvr.com's DNS entry is operating.

I continue to need the host file entry to get here reliably. When I reformatted my laptop I forgot to add it and the problem started again until I remembered to make the entry for this site.
