MPEGs will not play after a clean install

After a clean install, I find that I am worse off than ever. I tried again to install the SAF, but even without any other codec packs present, it will not play MPEGS with one of my online TV players installed, so it is not an option for me. I then reinstalled what had worked for me before; QTAlternative 1.68 to handle MOV files, followed by the K-Lite Codec pack. I configured ffdshow exactly as before.

Many files play, including the Transport Streams generated by live BDA recording. However, certain MPEG1 files will not. These are the output of some of the online players I use, so I must be able to play them. PVRx2 actually crashes completely after a few seconds of trying to play them. MPC plays them fine. I haven't really installed anything else, yet.

One of the files I am testing with is a show that we watched successully and stopped halfway to go to bed, so I know that PVRx2 has been able to play it before. It was the next day that my system drive crashed.

I carefully registered (and unregistered) a few of the filters that I thought might have been on my system before (including MPV, which was definitely there and so I left it). I also registered (and unregistered) some of the more likely codecs with MPC. It occurs to me now that perhaps VLC installs some filters, so I will install it next.

However, I am no longer even convinced that this is a codec problem.

It sounds like a case of screwy directshow decoders to me, but reproduce the problem, then zip and attach the pvrx2.exe.log and pvrx2.exe-native.log and I'll see if anything stands out.

There were several versions of each. It appears that the problem has been locking the log files, probably due to the ungraceful exit from PVRx2. I zipped them all, but it's likely the most recent date/time that is of interest; I did so right after a crash.

VLC also plays the files, but installing it did not help PVRx2 to do so. I guess that makes sense, as VLC manages its own codecs.

Can you try uninstalling The Haali Matroska filter as a test and see if files play again? I've found issues with Haali Media Splitter on MPEG containers. If uninstalling works then re-install it removing the checkbox from all of the containers (this ensures it will not split anything other than Matroska).

I wonder if its something to do with the length of the filename. Can you try copying the file to somewhere that ends up with a shorter path to see if it helps? for example, 'C:\temp\test.mpg' instead of 'V:\Recordings\Saturday Night Live Presents A Very Gilly Christmas\Saturday Night Live Presents A Very Gilly Christmas_20091226_14001451.mpg'

My next guess would be the Haali splitter, as mentioned above.

Sub, I just installed Mediaportal (I use it for YouTube), and without my permission it replaced DirectX from Aug. 2009 with DirectX from Aug. 2008. Do you anticipate any problems with this?

Testing this now, but I suspect not as it played before the hard drive crash.

Edit: I take it all back. I can't explain why it worked before, but it plays fine through the Video Library with a short file name.

I cant say I've encountered that specific problem reported by any user in the past, but I dont think I've seen a filename that long in any other users file. It would have been the same for years (not a new 1.4.7 problem).

Yeah, that's what I mean. It played in 1.4.7, but not after my rebuild.

That path (with filename) is 139 characters. I can play the following fine from my recordings screen and it has 174 characters:

Can you post the log with it working from the shorter path?

I suspect that your issue is because of either the Haali splitter or (more likely) the ffdshow raw video filter is being loaded.
