I just tried this as well, and reverting to the 9.0B version of quartz.dll made a noticable improvement on my video playback as well. I used to have occasional freezing or minor distortion on the top of my screen, and now video is smooth and tight. I'm running a Celeron D at 2.25MHZ, so this not exclusively an issue of processor speed.

Thank you all for your thorough documentation in sharing your findings on this. If you're not fully pleased with your video playback, give this a try!

I didn't have playback issues, but I figured there was no harm in giving this a try.

Replaced my quartz.dll as described. (Can someone confirm that the version is 6.05.01.0902 for both 9.0b and 9.0c and the only difference is the file size of 1.8 megs and 1.18 megs, respectively?)

I didn't notice a difference in playback quality, but skipping forward 1 minute at a time or reverse at 20secs (that's how i've set mine) is a bit more responsive. Also with on screen display menu up, the playback is less stuttery.

Pressing fast forward or reverse button is more smooth but pressing the play button to resume playback is still broken.

Quartz.dll 9.0c = 1,287,680 bytes = 6.5.2600.2180
Quartz.dll 9.0b = 1,246,208 bytes = 6.5.1.902

With risk of sounding ignorant, but how do I check which version of directX I use?

You can run 'dxdiag' and it will tell you.

Interesting, I wonder what I had before? I ran dxdiag before i did the upgrade it said i was running DirectX 9.0c.

The file i downloaded from the snapstream link is 1.87 MB (1,962,496 bytes) for 9.0b.

Yikes, I hope I don't have some altered spyware quartz.dll?

The file isn't operating system specific is it? (i.e. quartz.dll XP Pro = XP Home = Win2000 etc.)

I would think the XP versions would be the same, but the 2k one might be different. I did not download one from the internet, I had it on my hard drive because I updated manually to SP2 which includes DX9.0c. I'll be happy to host it here for the board if people are interested.

You can use dxdiag to figure out what versions of each file you're using, or you can open the properties for any .dll and it will also tell you the version number.

Thanks for posting all this here. You are going to help myself and others get past issues like this. All too often people don't return to say a solution or tip worked for them. Sometimes people find their own solution and don't relay it back to the posts which means other people having the same problem won't know about it. Either way, thanks sincerely. Smile
