LiveTV vs. recorded program audio differences

I've been using gb-pvr for about a month now, and I like it a lot. I recently wired my HTPC to my receiver and, unfortunately, I now cannot get sound out of my recorded tv shows.

I am fairly certain that the problem lies with my receiver, because when I play the recorded shows on another computer, the audio plays fine. Here is what is interesting: When I play live TV, my receiver decodes it just fine. The audio is still okay even after I've paused live TV and continued after a delay. But, when I go and open the same paused live TV stream with windows media player, zoom player or another player, I get no sound. I also get no sound when playing recorded TV shows through gb-pvr (or any other media player).

Like I said, I'm pretty sure that the problem lies with my receiver or possibly the sound card, but I'm wondering if there is a difference between the audio output from the Live TV player as opposed to the recorded TV player. I'm hoping I can use some knowledge from how the Live TV setup is configured to fix my problems. Can anyone tell me the differences between the Live TV player and the recorded TV player, if there are any?

I should note that I'm using the SPDIF output of a Chaintech AV-710 into a Harman AVR-630 receiver.

My info probably won't help you terribly much, but I also have the Chaintech A710 going through the optical to a Denon receiver. I have found a similar thing when using basically any app where different codecs are used throughout. It seems that somewhere along the line one of the codecs turns the SPDIF setting off (you should be able to verify this with some sort of "Digital" light that will disappear when it loses signal on the Amp).

The only way I have found to fix it is to go through _all_ audio codecs on the system and make sure that they are set to use SPDIF (and even then they can appear as off when something else starts using it).

I usually find it worse on the Intervideo codecs or PowerDVD 6 codecs (which is what originally started me having the issue), powerDVD 5 never caused this problem for me.

It's good to know that I'm not the only one with problems. I may try going back to PowerDVD 5, or getting the nvidia codecs and scrapping the PowerDVD ones. This is a very basic question: are all of the codecs listed under the sound controllers section of Device Manager? I've never had anything but crappy speakers connected to my comp. so I've never fussed with the codecs.

Another interesting thing I found out last night is that I can't get ANY mpeg recording to output sound, even though all of the .avi's I've checked worked fine.

If the codec tweaking doesn't work, I'll probably just run a digital and an analog input to my receiver and manually switch between them. Ugh.

I often found that a few of the codecs were not listed (or were awful hard to find) under there, an easier alternative is to try something like Sherlock 2 which will list all of the codecs in a semi-human readable format. That way you can start to see what is on the system (and my machine is a mess

EDIT: Also the latest drivers from VIA Arena gave me a bit better results (from reading support forums I was told older drivers were better, but have had more success with the latest drivers).
