This seems to only happen with folder.jpg in a folder, not actual pictures being shown as thumbnails.

To be honest, I've got no idea, and havnt seen other reports of it.

Is it specific images? From the error message, it looks like its some .NET runtime code dying when it tries to load your image file. Maybe there is something corrupt about the image file, or some non-standard format.

Yeah, it'll be a tuff one to narrow down. For me it seems to be folder.jpg images I created using photoshop for each of my DVDs. Maybe Jaggy can find some similarities.

Here is the file info for two of them:

File Size: 80.1 KB
Image Dimensions (pixels): 500 x 718 (0.4 MP)
Image Dimensions (inches) 6.94 x 9.97
Resolution: 72 dpi
Bit Depth: 24-bit color
Uncompressed Size: 1.0 MB
Resolution Unit: 2
Color Representation: Uncalibrated

File Size: 116.3 KB
Image Dimensions (pixels): 500 x 709 (0.4 MP)
Image Dimensions (inches) 2.50 x 3.54
Resolution: 200 dpi
Bit Depth: 24-bit color
Uncompressed Size: 1.0 MB
Resolution Unit: 2
Color Representation: sRGB

I created a test directory with 5 subfolders and dropped the same folder.jpg in each of the subfolders.
It seems it happens only when there is about 4 or more.
It happens when the cache is being created, so I can reproduce the problem just by deleting the cache and re-entering the directory.
I tried making the image smaller - still crashing.
I downloaded someone else's image from google - still crashing.

I thought it was crashing before anything was logged by NPVR, but it looks like there is something there actually. Maybe this might narrow it down.

I really can't get a handle on exactly what it is doing but I can agree with

I renamed all my folder.jpgs to folder.jpg.old & deleted the Thumbs cache & it still crashed almost straight away on entering it with a Windows send me now error that I couldn't find any way to copy/save so I could post it here.

Yeah, that's the error on Windows 7 that I posted in the screen shot.

You don't even need to make changes to the folder.jpg files, just delete the cache and it will crash again.

@hoborg

can you post exactly what .NET you have installed? I can't figure out why only a few of us have this problem and everybody else doesn't see this at all.

can you post exactly what .NET you have installed? I can't figure out why only a few of us have this problem and everybody else doesn't see this at all.

I have this problem on WinXP and Win7x64 + .NET 3.5 - latest revision using windows update.

BTW, nPVR using build in Windows OS thumbs generation ?

I installed .NET 4 and still have the same problem... it's so weird how it only crashes when the first couple thumbs are created, and then after that, it can create all the thumbs it needs in that same directory without crashing...
