I'm thinking of building a home DVR.

I have Verizon FiOS. I have one set top box.

I was wondering, is it possible to watch live TV while recording something at the same time?

I'm not sure of your providers system, but if you need a set top box then you won't be able to view live TV while recording something else if they are both only on the STB. The STB will only be able to deliver one thing at a time.

In addition to the a/v output from the STB itself, there should be coax and possibly MOCA output from the FIOS ON terminal that provides a clear QAM signal. The channels that are available in clear QAM varies. Entering you zip code here might help http://www.silicondust.com/support/channels/

coax cable comes in, one goes to router for internet and the other goes to the STB.
