extract audio from video

I'm sure this has been covered before, but I can't seem to find the post... Would you guys/gals recommend any free tool to extract audio from the video files? And in such case, which tool? I'd also like to be able to cut the files up into smaller ones, to make a cd out of it.

I can advise you to use Video mp3 Extractor PRO . Very good tool for converting avi, asf, wmv directly to mp3. Also it can convert a lot of file at once. :p

I used winamp to play the file and set the output the one that saves the sound file. I can't remember if this is done in real-time or if it's played as fast as computer can save...not exactly the most uhm..."finesse" of all tools, but it worked for me.

Could you not just use virtualdub mpeg,to extract the audio,then use an audio editor (freeware) like audacity?
Or have i mis-understood the question :confused:

By far, the best demuxer is PVAStrumento.
It not only extracts to elementary streams, it will automatically correct audio delay if there's any dropped audio, so it remains in sync for authoring to dvd. It will correct GOP size, and do many other things if necessary.
Very powerful program, yet simple to use.

For simple cutting, you could use virtualdubmod (not the regular vdub) and save a .wav file from the mpg.
Audacity or Goldwave will then allow edits, and resave as mp3 or .wav

Hades, you might be right. When I asked this question I had absolutely no idea about any of this - I don't think I had heard about virtualdub at that time. That's why I asked the question :-)
Did I try any of the suggestions? No. I was too lazy, my wife finally beat me to it and bought the CD instead ;-)
