You see, impatience is a bad guy ... Big Grin

The problem with failed regsvr32 is an easy one: you have a typo. the monogram aac decoder is "mmaacd.ax" and not "mmaace.ax", that's all.

The LAV "Splitter" isn't a decoder and thus not selectable as decoder. This is ok and alright and shouldn't worry you at this point. The task of the splitter is to split up any container like .mkv, .avi, .wtv (just those you have selected). It doesn't decode anything. For this we are using ffdshow or monogram aac decoder.

Please be patient, so i can write a small installation guide.

Btw., under Win 7 it is NOT enough to install the splitter or decoder. You have to tweak the merit of directshow filters with a tool like Win7DSFilterTweak too, since windows 7 introduced (again) a new system called "windows media foundation" whose codecs will be choosed everytime as primary ones by directshow und normal circumstances.

Reddwarf Wrote:Is your HD recordings H.264? What decoder are you using for them? I use Cyberlink PDVD10 both for MPEG2 and H.264 and have rarely problems with skipping, but occasional I have to do an extra short skip (forward or backwards).

Back on 2.3.4, with UK H.264 content, I was finding the MS decoder in Win7 very very slow at times when skipping and the PDVD11? codec was fast to skip but suffered image corruption.
Now I am on 2.3.6, I can't reliably reproduce any skipping problem but I do find I have to do a short skip to give it a kick up the arse occasionally. I find that the latest PDVD11 from the SAF 6 codec pack skips fast without any corruption.

Do you mean with respect to playing back mkv, avi, adivx content as I certainly haven't had to do this on my pc and have not heard (on the forum) of this being a requirement to get good playback.
I look forward to seeing the guide, hopefully all will be explained...!

If you're using SAF6, then SAF does this job for you. The main "problem" is the introducion of media foundation codecs. Within Win 7 and Win 8 they have all the time the highest priority, especially within applications using the "default system decoders". DirectShow Filters are choosed only in second instance, OR if you manipulate Win 7 / Win 8 to use DirectShow Filters as primary ones.
It's possible to configure ffdshow too to popup for EVERY mediaplayback, but this is a very bad behaviour ... everytime you're trying to use wmp, or starting a game ... everytime popping up an ffdhow menu asking you to "playback onetime with ffdshow, everytime, onetime not playback with ffdshow or never playback"
This isn't userfriendly and to avoid this, i am writing the guide. I'll started in my native language (german) and will translate it later. So it can happen, that i need some screenshots from you.

I'll try to, but don't expect to much. My primary task is a clean and working installation of LAV Filter, ffdshow and perhaps MONOGRAM AAC decoder.
You like nPVR? Then please help pay the bills, and keep the project alive!

I would certainly agree with those who suggest trying different decoders as it certainly cured several problems on my setup. On my computers changing from Cyberlink to ffdshow decoders cured many problems associated with “skipping”.

Previous settings I had working the other day did not work this morning when showing the wife. Go figure!!

Quote:You have to tweak the merit of directshow filters with a tool like Win7DSFilterTweak too,

Installed SAF 6.06. I changed both video decoders back to the Microsoft ones after running the above tool and setting most of the preferred decoders to LAV. Am also using the MONOGRAM mpeg1 audio decoder and am receiving Dolby Digital output. Pause/resume on Live TV works well. About a 10 second delay with jumping around in recordings.

Am still trying to be patient, but making progress! Smile

I found the MS decoders to be the slowest at skipping with HD content. 10 secs is not good.

But by using the Win7DSFilterTweak tool allow the MS decoder option to load other than the MS default? Which I have now set to LAV within the tool.. Have tinkered with LAV settings, but do not want to get in to deep before ShingDragon's guide is available...

A few questions...

How is the guide coming along?

Regarding the MS Tweak Tool, recommended tweaks?

Does npvr only use 32 bit drivers?

Where in and which log will show me which decoders are used for live tv and .ts playback?

Work in progress, i'll update it step by step in the general subforum. Currently I am busy with the impending move to the new apartment at the beginning of march in another city with my family.

Grampz Wrote:Regarding the MS Tweak Tool, recommended tweaks?
Just don't disabled Media Foundation stuff. It's not recommandable to disable this functions. It's better to tweak the decoders for the codecs. For example: ffdshow for MPEG2 and h264, while using Microsoft Decoder for VC1 and MONOGRAM for AAC. The AAC one is another tricky one: most apps are not able to recognize a difference between AAC and HE-AAC, so that you have to experiment a little with a usable decoder.

Grampz Wrote:Does npvr only use 32 bit drivers?
I think you're talking about decoders. Yes, it just uses 32 bit decoders, because NPVR is a 32 bit application.

As you can see, it is not calling the used decoders by name. If you want to determine the used codecs, you can watch for example the icons within the systray of ffdshow, where all currently used decoders will be showed. Or you determine the used codecs with graphedit (it's using the default decoders while rendering a videofile). But this one is a tricky one: If you have, for example, ffdshow configured to only popup for NPVR (whitelisting) then it won't be used for graphedit.
