I must say i love NPVR so far.
I am not fully using it yet but what i have discover i love.
What i am attempting to do is watch livetv from outside my network using androids vlc. It is working beautifully but it keeps buffering. I was wondering if maybe there is a setting that i am missing that will allow me to change the bitrate.

The way i currently view from outside my network by typing the http://<myexternalipaddress>:8866/live?channel=2 into my android's vlc streaming address.

Also i have to manually type in the address in vlc. is there away to select from maybe an EPG?

Sorry, but it always delivers whatever bitrate stream is supplied by the device. With analog channel source there is some settings you can tweak to change the bitrate. With digital channels, which I assume you're using, the broadcaster decides the bitrate.

Its a different mechanism which I'm not that familiar with, but I think NEWA has some functionality that will attempt a server side transcode of the stream, to deliver a lower bitrate stream to the client.

XBMC provides a EPG etc interface to these URLs (the native full bitrate ones). I don't think there is any other application that provides a user interface on these URLs.

Does the transcode option still exist?

http://<serverip>:8866/transcode?channel=1&resolution=720x576&bitrate=1000k

This doesn't work reliably, so I don't advise any one use it. The problems with this method happen outside of my code, so nothing I can do anything about.

Now you tell me...

I built the ability to use that URL format into nDroid. What's likely to be the issue(s) with using it?

Cheers,

This has always been experimental. The main problem is the ffmpeg included with NextPVR is three years, and it won't reliably transcode a lot of streams now. Newer versions can be used but they take different parameters than used in more current version so knowledge of ffmpeg is required to update config.xml.

Also not all PC's have the horsepower to do this on the fly, it might impact recordings and normal playback.

My biggest problem is error popping up in the interactive desktop consuming a lot of resources and blocking.

Actually, I've pointed it out nearly every time I've seen these URLs mention in posts in the past.

I'm not intending to remove the functionality. I just know its not that reliable, and prone to the stream stopping, so I didn't end up building functionality around it.

If it's working fine for you, then you can continue you to use it. I just wont be able to do much about it if you find problems like streams stopping prematurely etc.

Sure, I know you've mentioned that reliability isn't guaranteed - it was basically the bit where you said...

...I don't remember you saying it quite like that before Smile ).

Thanks for the clarification though - I'll leave the transcode option in nDroid. My take on streaming in general has always been YMMV anyway as it has to rely on external players.

Cheers,
Brian
