you might try hitting F7 and play with the aspect ratio to get rid of the black bars on playback.

Bingo. I forgot about that....seems you can also click on the image and select too which is nice. I assume it remembers for all the playbacks vs having to do each time?

Yes it does remember. There is a section in the config file for this, remembers aspect for 3 TV Shape settings: 4x3, 16x9 and 16x10 screens. The TV Shape can be selected in the Settings menu on the General Tab.
