Hmmm...you've got me worried. Can't GBPVR handle movies ripped to HD's and accessed through a cover pic? Or are you asking of the way I would set them up on the HD (File Vs ISO?) Why would I need a database, as I thought GBPVR already had one.

Well the GBPVR database is only for recordings. GBPVR also handles movies, you can also traverse to any file in any directory you want to play. But you don't get any search capabilities.

So for me I would be standing there, wanting to see that movie, with you-know-how which does you-know-what, not knowing what the movie name was. I know it is somewhere on my hd - but where?

I refrase my question: How will you be organizing your collection so you can find the movie you wan't to see?

blader_se - I wasn't aware GBPVR 's database was only for recordings and you're right, I would definitely want some type of search function. Doesn't one of the "Video" plug-ins do this? I'm still learning my way around GBPVR and I just don't get the time I need to get ahead quickly - too busy reading and posting here perhaps Smile

Well I've seen someone whishing for database support in XRecord, which have a nice search (FastFind) feature.

I think I would like to see a database plugin with search capabilities which can read Xrecords .dat files and create a database for that...

I guess there is one other factor to consider. While you are clearly not trying to make a commercial product, in the US there is ongoing litigation from the DVD CCA against a commerical vendor of a DVD HD server product

http://www.kaleidescape.com/news/legal.html

Also products like DVD Decryptor are now frozen in development because of legal challenges so when the companies produce new copy protection schemes that rely on bad sectors etc on the DVD, you might find you won't be able to read and copy them to your HD

KiwiKid Wrote:Hey...thx for the replies.

I think my original post must be flawed so I'll explain a little further.

I plan to build a media server (approx 5Tb or more) to run all my dvd's from a hard-drive based system. Originally, I was just going to rip my dvd's in file mode (only the main movie), but since I've been playing around with some S/ware like DVDlabPro, and DVD Remake etc, I realised how dvd menus can play an important role.

So...if I am playing a ripped movie from the HD and want to select another scene - how do you do that in GBPVR? (Normally, in a DVD, a scene selecion menu pops up, but with only the movie ripped there isn't one available) The chapter points are normally saved with the video are they not - so I guess GBPVR will skip forwards and backwards along those chapter points??

What happens when you push the menu button on the remote while playing a movie (Straight back to GBPVR's frontend?? )

Can GBPVR bookmark certain parts of the movie and store that bookmark in some permanent file somewhere - like a chatper list?

I guess I'm really answering my own questions in some ways, because I realise the only way to get things the way I want is to run things in ISO mode with a modified IFO. Damn...that's going to be a lot of work.

Can you clarify this more and I will see what I can do.

I would like to find and view my recordings/movies no matter which format (.avi .iso .mpg) they are stored in, even if I only know some words in the title or description or just the year of the movie/recording etc.

Efffective search often means having a database underneath, so that's why I mention database.

Making it a new plugin was just my way of doing something as a module that you could use or ignore.

It's also a desire that it would be simple to add information. Today I'm already exporting everything to .dat files automatically in postprocessing.bat. So it would be easy (from a user perspective) to just parse those .dat files and add to the database. Going via the plain text .dat files also means that I can manually, or otherwise, create/edit the information with whatever tool I want (for modularity purposes).

When it comes to movies, grabbing info from IMDB seems like an equally "easy" way to add to the database.

Deleting could perhaps be done by going through the database and see what files has been removed?
