It was the 64 bit installer from kodi.tv (Kodi v18.2 "Leia") - couple of things I have got left to try before I give up and start dual booting Linux - have now got the latest C++ redist's and am going to remove Aeroglass from W8.1, possibly a graphics driver update, although I would rather stay on the last catalyst driver for my HD7700 (the one before they dumbed down and broke deinterlacing)
It's not an overly complicated system - it's more - overly simple operatives 
) Installed 32 bit kodi and spent the rest of the weekend adding Sources & Smart Playlists and tweaking to my hearts content 
Replacement for Movies sorted! Watched a few episodes of Warrior with the Boss, who actually commented that she thought the picture quality was better
