Unfortunately that's less likely. The Fire stick is basically just Android device, and the Android app has worked on it in the past, so not a huge deal to get it working on it again.

There is a special version of Exoplayer for the FTV. It doesn't get around the mean issue of not being able to play 1080i mpeg h264 on the FTV 4k but it might perform better then stock Exoplayer.

Jump ahead to 2021... Is there any movement on this? As a Fire TV Cube owner, I would love another option for PVR. I have no desire to hack my box to get the Google Play Store. Any hopes of publishing on the Amazon Appstore? As a paid app it would open up a whole new market.

Installing Kodi from an APK is not a hack, sideloading is supported and is pretty easy. Kodi makes a very good client from NextPVR for your Fire TV Cube. Ironically many developers feel the 4K stick is a better player.

Strictly talking about PVR / TV related functions, does the NextPVR Kodi plugin have equal functionality to the dedicated Android TV client?

Martin is right in that loading Kodi on a firestick is easy (even I can do it!) and Kodi works very well on the firestick. The only downside is that Kodi gobbles up plenty of the precious available storage on the stick, consequently, limiting other apps that one might want to use.

I would like to see a FTV npvr app personally, but will live with Kodi in the mean time.

The Android TV app is a paid app on Google Play. Exporting the APK and sideloading on a FireTV would violate licensing. If the dev is interested in having some folks test and report issues, they would likely need to supply the APK.

Sub's apk still needs to talk to the play store which is the issue.
