I am recording a movie called "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home" and when I browsed for the folder I found the recording in a folder called "SY3JLR~2".  I have no idea how this happened.

I started the same movie using my Windows Nextpvr server and it created the correct folder name. Any Ideas?

Thanks.

I am guessing you are seeing is a Windows shortname. Does it play ok? Also Is it an NTFS drive (not recommended in linux)?

Sorry I understand better know. NextPVR is creating a folder using a an invalid DOS filename character so Windows must present it as a shortname. Does it look ok in linux?

The drive is formatted as ext4 but it is accessible on a windows pc via samba share and I'm using a Windows PC to view the folders.

When I look and the folder within Linux it is displayed correctly. Yes it plays ok.

I guess the Windows shortname you mentioned is what is happening. There is one other movie title folder that is displayed in Windows as a shortname.

Thanks Martin

After a brief search on the web I found that this is actually a samba thing.

In smb.conf on my Linux server I added "mangled names = no" for each share and then the filenames were displayed correctly in Windows. This is what Windows displays now after the change - Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986)

Thanks for helping with this, I had no idea what to look for.

Odd that it displays in Windows what happens if you try to copy that folder to a Windows folder?

I tried copying the folder and nothing happens. It probably would work with the shortname.

So, when I started the same recording with the Wndows NextPVR server it changed the semicolon to an underscore. Does NextPVR do this or is Windows changing it?

NextPVR asks .net for the list of invalid filename characters, and replaces them with an underscore. Unfortunately it's a different set of invalid characters depending on if NextPVR is running on Windows or Linux.

Ok, thanks for the explanation.

So, my Linux NextPVR server is allowing semicolons in the folder name. When I share the folders with samba, Windows can see the shares on my network.

However, I discovered a second Linux box on the network cannot see shared folders with a semicolon in the folder name. They just don't show up.

Is it possible for Linux NextPVR to change the semicolon like windows does?
