Thankyou for that concise explanation.

To be honest,  my Yamaha and Sony AVR's seem to be able to create good surround from the AAC audio.
Some of the clients report 2 channel AAC Audio, and some say 0 channel, unknown AAC audio.

I can not really tell the difference when my STB is set between Dolby Digital and PCM, but the PCM seems bit louder.

There is nothing wrong with AAC with the right bit rate if you don't need the impact of multi-channel sound.

There is an option with AC3 sound capture. on the Hauppauge devices to boost the volume, I suspect it is lower because of the the h/w decoder that is being used.
